Sorry Rose only just seen this! Most of the people that help us are SEmployed. Shepherds who have flocks themselves & just come at the busy times!.

Hi , not as many as we used to have I think we are only lambing 800 of our own, but we always used to lamb upwards of about 2500 .
No I didn't go to the Show but if you do get a chance it's well worth it! Sam.

Oh that's a shame you didn't make it! Epperstone no longer exists as either a mounted or dog section any longer I'm afraid, that's just down the road to me, now if you get the chance go to a local farmers show where actual Working Shepherds are running true working dogs it is hilarious !. lol. In fact most of our dogs think they are called " you little black Bar Steward! Get in behind!!"

Last spring, I was quite often found scooping up lambs and putting them back in the field, the first time I did it it was so scary I thought I might hurt it but after about the 5th time it was easy, the chap whose lambs they were was grateful I was doing it and offered me a job, we do know him, which was lucky because if anyone saw me they might have thought I was pinching them.  They are little devils and if they can find a gap they will.

I love seeing them when they must be about teenage and they go round in little gangs, jumping all over the place and finding hills or rocks to stand on....they're bonkers!!!

When i was little we used to keep orphaned lambs warm in the fireside oven, i have been chased over enough dikes in my time by a tup, they used to go for the back of your knees, thank goodness i never fell in.

Me too, Rose. I love animals. Not sure I would have wanted to be a vet though, but some other job working with animals. We had a smallholding when I was a kid,  so I sort of grew up with hens and pigs etc. I used to love going into the hen coops when I was about 4 and collecting the eggs, until one morning the fox had got in; I'll spare you the details, but the scene was enough to make me scream and not go in there again.

I would love to see working dogs at shows ,  are they usually advertised for the public or is it just farmers that get to know about them ?

Most agricultural shows are advertised, but if they are trialling they very often aren't farm working sheepdogs, a proper working collie has no time for finesse he will bite to move on a stubborn sheep that continues to stand up to him( it's a fault in trials) very often he is bringing in hundreds of sheep by himself or with other dogs. & very often is working out of sight & range of whistle & voice commands.

Nice pic ,  they certainly have to work hard to keep that lot in order LOL

Border collies are beautiful highly inteligent dogs , a friends dad always had one & they were all named Flossie LOLSmiley Happy

Collected my Library book today, "One Girl and Her Dogs" the true story of a Shepherd and her taking over an isolated Northumberland farm; should be a good book.
