It is looking highly likely that my beloved dog, Skye, will be going to Rainbow Bridge tomorrow. She has been poorly most of her life and because of this ours was the first proper home she had ever had when we took her from rescue four and a half years ago. Over the past year her arthritis in all legs has progressed and cruciate damage last year made it all worse with the vet unable to operate on the cruciate because of the weakness of her legs already. Six weeks ago she suffered a minor stroke which she sort of recovered from but she is now so very tired and un-interested in life. Today I went in to talk to the vet (in tears), and she is coming out in the morning to observe, assess, and advise, but I think the outcome is inevitable. I just so hope that I make the right decision for her.

Always remember that she loved you and that you loved her. You gave her a good life, and though the pain does lessen eventually, the happy memories will always be there

And God asked the canine spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a dog, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.
Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel,
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled.
For, you see, they need me, quite certainly.
But don't they understand, asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined for all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is...forever and ever and ever.
Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious dog.
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them.
I just am...forever and ever and ever.

Thank you all so much for your kind and comforting words, it's still so painful but has really helped having others that really understand just how painful it is. Skye was a beautiful Newfoundland who was born crippled and so nobody wanted her for the first 15 months of her life, the rescue organisation funded a huge operation for her legs just before we took her and we were more or less her last chance. Over the few years we had her she suffered pain most days but never complained. She was a canine disaster when she arrived but learned so quickly and was so proud of every new thing that she mastered, although she was always a little insecure and a real Mum's girl. Poor Sam, our other rescued Newfi is just so bewildered although we let him see Skye after her passing so he knows what has happened, but he was devoted to her from the first day he arrived. She has left us with so many wonderful memories and has made me realise just how many friends who used to be strangers (on here) there are. I will be forever grateful to Skye and to all my new friends. Thank you.
