Legs in Summer

I may have asked something on a similar line before but im having problems knowing what to get to wear when the weather gets a bit warmer to make my legs look ok. Having put on weight lately, my legs although im short are very chunky especially my calfs. I have the dreaded cellulite at the tops and i am a bit self concious of them. I dont really have to dress up much and tend to wear elasticated trousers to work with socks and shoes as im a cleaner. When weather gets warmer though i cannot wear shorter skirts as i used too and i just wonder if anyone has any ideas?. i have brought cropped jeans before and wore them with trainers or sandals. Im fifty as you know and want to be a bit fashionable although i do not follow trends fastidiously or anything. What would you ladies wear if you were me?. Im of the chunky leg and arm brigade and i do as i say feel a little uncomfortable about it( not saying theres anything wrong with bigger ladies). I have before been quite slim and could wear what i wanted but my shape has changed completely this past year,,what with the menopausal middle age spread and all. My waist used to be always tiny and slim but its gone!!!. Please dont think im vain,, im not i just dont want to go out and look a mess not knowing how to dress with my more matronly figure so to speak!!. i just need some advice.Woman Frustrated

Invest in a pair of linen city shorts they are smarter than ordinary ones & you can either wear them with heels as a smart casual, or with flats if you want , I got some a couple of years ago to wear at work I can team them with a smart jacket or if it's warm with a summer top, you can get some lovely colours now, save your short shorts for home( lol) mind you after seeing some of em walking about the town I don't think you've got much to worry about!.

Always look on the bright side.

I wish I could wear just socks under my jeans.  Winter and summer I'm in thick elasticated support hose and socks. Woman Sad

Could you wear sandals and a long floaty skirt ?

I would go for cool cotton crops & sandles. Well that's what I do, or an ankle length skirt. My legs (at 67) are nothing to write home about! lol

That's a good idea CG another idea is to wear a sun dress with the tiny straps & wear a tea shirt underneath, the problem with a long floaty skirt if your not tall is it makes you look & feel dumpy even if your not I opt for dresses every time I love them very cool , feminine , & you can dress them up or down with shoes etc.

Your right there Saasher. I was thinking this morning when you go abroad most people me included dont care what they look like. I think its the thought of someone you know seeing you and remarking on it. I let it all hang out if i go abroad,,but it feels free and lovely though. I would walk around in a bikini top and shorts and not worry. Im very self consious thats my problem!!. LOL.

I know what you mean Rose I would & did wear the shortest shorts & tiniest tops on the farm but I wouldn't dream of wearing them in town, I still wear em in the house though but run upstairs & change if I know I've got visitors( lol) I don't think I'd dare wear a bikini though too old now! lol.

I normally wear cropped pants and T shirts in the summer.  I have got several pairs of cropped pants and more T shirts that you can shake a stick at.  I always feel comfortable in them.

Rose, cropped trousers with trainers/sandals for work would be ok but I would drop the trainers for non work and wear them with either the sandals or ballerina pumps, as the latter are much more flattering to the ankle and calf I think as they are low in the front so give an impression of extra leg length . You could also wear full length trousers in a light weight material like linen or cotton which is cool. Top wise I would avoid anything with a "capped" sleeve as in my view I don't think they are flattering to larger arms as they "cut" the arm just at the widest width. Tops with a sleeve to just above the elbow or something 3/4 works.  Have a look at the "petite" ranges in shops as it's really more about proportion of length of things which can either magnify or minimise size/shape. If I wear sleeveless tops it's usually under loose linen buttoned tops - not quite jackets but almost, then turn the sleeves up to 3/4 length. I tend to "layer" quite a lot and wear long scarves wrapped round along with necklaces etc in complimentary colours.

It's hard when you change shape but I'm sure you'll find the right combinations of things, just experiment a bit by trying lots of looks before you buy. Smiley Happy

I am just like you Rose from skinny minny to b**bs alert and expanding bits all over the place. Whatever you do try not to submerge yourself in mahoosive tunics and those long denim skirts **bleurgh**.

I very rarely wear linen because it creases and my OCD goes into overdrive, lol, but good old M&S do a nice range of trousers in a kind of crinkly fabric (with an elasticated waist), I have them in black, navy and white.  Echo what has been said about the cap sleeves, try a wee vest, with trousers and a nice floaty shirt on top, wee ballet flats or sandals. And never mind what it says on the label.  I wear t-shirts from a size 12 to a size 18 - if you feel comfy - you'll feel more confident.

Best thing for legs ever, I mean ever, is a fake tan - makes your legs look instantly thinner.  St. T. is **bleep** proof.  Hope this helps.

Ahh Rose, I know how you feel. I am not exactly chunky now but have 'filled out' rather more than I woul have liked and I am older than you and still want to be reasonably fashionable.

I have found George (A*da) trousers and have been wearing them since last summer. A lot of them have stretchy backs to the waists and they make them in different lengths and styles. They have some which are perfect for summer, adjustable length in light cotton fabric, or some in linen and they don't cost a lot.

I wear strappy tops, I have arms, they are older arms, I can't change them and I have no intention of being hot and uncomfortable so I wear what I like. Can always pop a soft shirt over the top if needed.

One thing I would say, if you wear cropped trousers be careful with ballerina pumps or you might look like a matador.

Cropped trousers for me, but being only 5' 3" i usually have to take them up or turn them up,  M & S do different lengths, I have a denim pair, a pastel stripey pair, and a turquoise pair, I tend to wear shirts as I have big boobies and broad shoulders,  I will wear strappy tops if I go out with a floaty cardy, but I never show my arms unless in the garden.  It is difficult when you reach 50, you still want to look fashionable but not mutton dressed up as lamb.

I have a couple of outfits that I feel really comfortable in, and tend to wear them a lot.

When my belly started getting bigger due to the dreaded menapause, I couldn't make up my mind what to wear so I bought a few things off ebay eally cheap, found what I felt I looked right in and then bought some more. So no expensive mistakes for me.

All the ideas on here are good so thank you. I do tend to go to M&S for all my jeans and trousers for the length mainly as they cater for short or taller. You do yes have to get a certain length in skirts say for your shape. I have found in T Shirts,,,( being of the big T***D brigade,, and they just seem to have got Bigger since the perimenopause) i cannot wear turtle neck sort of t.shirts, they have to be either round or v necks and lowish but not too low obviously. I think im going to have to buy a size bigger t.shirt as im so embarrassed by my chest!!!. I tend to do what i did when younger and try to wear a jacket or try to hide them with my arms!!!. Oh excuse me but its true. And of course you have to have a good bra and their not cheap nowadays. I cannot wear heels any more at all my ankles are weak and im probably top heavy so im always tripping or falling over!. My mother used to be the same strangely.

Oh the joys of getting to middle age and dealing with a changing shape,,, at least im not alone!!!. Thank you for your ideas, keep them coming.heart
