Healthy Eating Sparrows

Some weeks ago, I planted some small lettuce plants into tubs, making sure to place them out of reach of the snails. The lettuces were coming along nicely; then I looked out yesterday and saw a Sparrow and its babies in one of the tubs, tucking into the lettuce. And they were back for more today, bless them. Oh well, shop bought lettuce here I come, 🙂

but i bet if you put lettuce leaves on the bird table they would think you had gone nuts and would not eat them.:-)

thats why they grow them in cold frames or with a cloche over them  while they get big enough  🙂

All my salad and greens crops I keep under net because of birds.   In fact, I pretty much net everything other than the onion family!

I love wildlife, but there are limits....

I used to put mine in one of those plastic mini growhouses, but the snails always managed to get in and eat the lettuce.

Enjoy feeding your sparrows, they're far more useful than lettuce.:-D

I think mine are getting 2 of their 5 a day, CB, as I also put any soft pears out for them, 🙂

A few weeks ago I was walking round the garden and I heard very loud and persistent bird twittering. On investigation I found two blue tits hopping about and twittering at the top of thier voices, while at the same time pecking the flowers off my apple tree.

I walked right up to the tree and put my hand up in the branches but they just carried on regardless. They were not the least bit afraid.

I swear the little blighters were laughing at me.
