Thanks folk you Have convinced me that for all practical purposes I have a good camera, and that to invest in a DSLR might not give VFM.
My understanding is that to get as much zoom as x18 would mean a seriously expensive DSLR with zoom lens and the 'outfit' would be top heavy and more difficult to handle than the FZ18.

I don't know if they are made in Japan for real but I have used them and happy with them
what do the letters mean in the types of lenses, for example my new camera lenses are AF-S DX but I've seen others with VR in the model name?
Your Lumix is one I looked at when changing camera last year ( joint birthday/Christmas pressie 🙂 ) but I love the swivel screen and wouldn't want to be without that now. Most of my photo's are of our pets so the swivel makes it so easy to get down to their level or even take a pic when they think I'm not watching them :-D
Forgot to say, poor birds with the "predators" of big planes going over !!!
borzoi do you have the FZ50 as that has the swivel screen too and does come in handy
No, I went for the Canon S5 IS as was pleased with previous Canon, but that was one reason ( swivel screen ) I looked at the FZ50.
Think all cameras should have it as makes experimenting much easier, up high shots, low shots, round corners even 😄
Took some of foxes while hiding behind a shed, they thought someone was about but couldn't see me, only the camera :-D

I prefer the viewfinder too but its great to have the swivel screen on some occasions
Just been looking due to Sturos mentioning a x2 for his camera and have found a x3 lens for my favorite camera the S5500 🙂
