Does anyone of you clever bods know anything about bicep injuries please?

I went to The doctors with severe pain in my right upper arm and was diagnosed with an injured bicep, Doctor told me to rest it as much as I can otherwise it won't heal. Well I have tried to but as I am a carer to a few members of my family and can't keep still I have damaged it again.

This time I think I have completely torn/ruptured it as it has bruised and gone a funny shape, I have tried to rest it again and the pain has gone, but the shape and bruising is still the same.

My question is, is there anyone out there who has experienced similar who can tell me they finally recovered and got their bicep back to normal. Ho long did it take or did you have to go and have surgery to repair it. The thing is.. I have googled and I really don't want to have surgery, I can't afford the time off.   Smiley Sad

If it comes to stopping driving for a bit - remember supermarkets deliver, and there are always taxis.

I know from talking to an elderly driver who's knee "went" suddenly so that she couldn't drive that car owners tend not to even think of taxis as a possible solution.

Thanks guys xxxx

Well I have so far survived my heavy work load today, I only used my one arm to lift all the heavy shopping bags so did several trips more than normal back and forth, Got a few twinges in it today but I can cope with that.

Have to say though the day has been a horrible one, I have had to take my Dad's death certificate to all his banks etc, and register me as Mum's power of attorney as she has Vascular dementia. Sooooooo sad.

We were never meant to grow old, tis horrible to see your loved ones go xxxxWoman Sad

Sending you plenty of hugs as I think that you need them at the moment.  Hope that you get things sorted out soon.  Good luck at the doc's on Wednesday.  Let us know how you get on.  We tend to bully over things like that because we care.

Does anyone of you clever bods know anything about bicep injuries please?

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would fill you in, I did go to the Doctors today about my arm, and she has confirmed what I was worried about that it is a suspected torn/severed bicep tendon. That means one of two tendons at the top of my arm that secures my bicep to the top of my arm and shoulder joint has more than likely detached.Smiley Sad

It means it does need treating which will probably ne surgery, but I won't know for sure till I attend an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon.

Surgery isn't always done in older people but I don't class myself as old.......yet and surgery would mean restoring my strength and usage. I need my arm strength for the amount of responsibilities I have to everyone else.

Soooooo, it may mean 3 months to get back to normal.

Looks like I am going to have to do as I am told and take it on the chin.......Smiley Frustrated

At the moment I look like popeye,     yukyukyukyukyukyuk.    Smiley LOL

Oh dear I suspected as much, still at least they can do something, what you will have to remember is this, do as you are told if you injure it any further the outcome won't be as good, & when they give you instructions after the operation carry them through to the letter. Let the rest of your family do something !!!.

Take it from one who didn't do as she was told when I tore a ligament in my shoulder, do what you are told or it will take a lot longer to heal.

I'm not a "clever bod" about bicep injuries but I was just wondering if physiotherapy could help or perhaps a visit to an osteopath?

If it were me I would want an X-ray or MRI scan to confirm it before having any surgery. I would certainly visit  an osteopath who could possibly help with pain relief as they can do very gentle manipulation. Don't go near a chiropractor though as they have a different way of working and will cause more problems!

Your GP can give you a referral "walk in" note to get an X-ray before seeing an Orthapedic consultant.

Whatever you decide to do, in the meantime just try and take it easy with your arm putting as little strain on it as possible.

Physio is an option that was suggested earlier on , & scans etc will be part of the pre op treatment, I'm afraid with detached & also with the tendons being involved surgery is the only option, this type of injury is not one that will get better without intervention, the scan will confirm the extent of the injury & that determines what type of surgery is performed!.
Further injury could be caused& without discussing with the Dr concerning alternative treatment even for pain relief pre op should not be attempted! Many Drs nowadays do work closely with physio so it's certainly worth asking & there is a very good chance they will be involved after the op!.

oh that sounds terrible, but at least you know what you are dealing with, was thinking of you yesterday forum.

none of us are getting any younger so injuries need to be sorted out asap and you have to think of the long term effect.

The Doc says my movement in the whole arm and shoulder is very good considering, so as saasher says, a scan probably will reveal the extent of the injury.

Surgery though if needed will restore the muscle back to normal, at the moment the strength is not there as there is far less pull up if you know what I mean.

Well...

Orthopeadic clinic visited today and good news....they are amazed at how much strength I have got in my right arm although confirming my bicep tendon has detatched.  I am not getting much pain and my movement is almost as it should be so they xrayed my shoulder just to make sure there is nothing else causing problems and all is classed as normal.

All they intend to do with me as a little bit of physiotherapy to improve the minor stiffness and see how I am in 6 weeks. They told me they won't consider surgery as there really is no need (in my case) I have to say I am quite relieved and that I am really very grateful my strength is so good.

Yippeee although this is quite a common thing apparently with my age group they are not worried in the least and say I should get on fine. The surgeon said our bodies have a very good ability to adabt to compensate for problems like mine. Just goes to show how wonderfully made we are.

Woohooooooooo thank you thank you thank you.   xxxxxxx

I will however still have a muscle that makes me look like popeye lol, but even that could settle down.Woman Happy

Good to hear that surgery won't be needed - hope that the physio works and that you are soon recovered.
