Breast feeding

What is your opinion on women that breast feed their babies in public?  Is it right or should it be done discreedly?

Re: Breast feeding

At the risk of trolls coming out of the woodwork to accuse me of living in a fantasy world I will say this.
In an ideal world views differ & that makes for a good debate, but when it descends into insults & intolerance it not only gets nasty & personal but also takes away from what started as a good debate, the only thing then that happens is people are afraid to join in & contribute , even if you disagree & put your point across, people should then forget it & never bear grudges, but they do.
The only education you will get from that is, "there's Nowt so Queer as Folk" lol. lol.
I will now retire for a few days. lol lol.

Re: Breast feeding

What I was trying to say was that we should all be able to say what we want when having a discussion but that people should in turn listen to other peoples views and set out reasoned arguments for and against without the discussion decending into name calling everyone has a right to their own views and to be able to put their viws out there without fear of retribution. There is nothing wrong with a lively debate, it is a healthy way to learn about everyones views.

Things can get heated when both sides think they are right.

I find things get heated when one side won't admit they're wrong!

Re: Breast feeding

Then surely if indeed they are proven to be wrong it's up to whoever to point it out calmly & without rancour?.

Absolutely but even when one uses reasoned argument to demonstrate the error of someone's ways, the other party rarely says "I see your point", "I understand now" or such like. They tend to say things like "well I don't agree" without saying why, or "we'll have to agree to disagree" despite the fact that their reasoning (or lack of) has been shown to be flawed.

Re: Breast feeding

Good point. lol. But that's not being nasty both have withdrawn from the debate with pride intact.
That's the nature of the beast! lol.
& some will labour the point until the cows come home just for the heck of it? lol.
We are going of topic now! lol.

Re: Breast feeding

I think one of the problems (not the only one) is that some boards/forums can be quite prickly (not this one I hasten to add) and it is easy to accidently offend someone. That person then retaliates in defense and both sides can end up scutinising each others posts looking for slights.

To have a good discussion you need people who are willing the look at other peoples posts in a generous way, even if, ultimately, you dont agree with them.

Quite right. To bring it back - I breast fed both of mine and never had any comments.

I would also like to point out that from a babies view point feeding from a bottle and feeding from the breast is quite different. Someone suggested that babies could be fed in public from a bottle containing breast milk. I can only say that, from experience, not all babies will take a bottle. Neither of mine would although I did try, because I wanted to leave them with baby-sitters. 😞

Re: Breast feeding

Just to clarify, I mentioned being able to use a bottle for breast milk but that by no means suggests you should be obliged to do so. I was happy for the wife to hand me a bottle of breats milk and let me have a go because I loved feeding my babies!

Don't think they had much choice when it came to taking to a bottle, they did as they were told!

Re: Breast feeding

I remember you said that lambsy, but I wasnt aiming my reply specifically at you.

There was someone else who said that women should use a bottle and I looked back and its message 28.

Someone once said to me that if the baby was hungry they would use a bottle, but mine never would. I would guess that its a technique they have to learn quite early.

Re: Breast feeding

At it's zenith The Sun had a circulation of about 4million readers, and page 3.

It's still the case over a a huge range of our media that certain images sell products, yet despite/because of being bombarded with such images, here we are aghast in some cases, at natural mother & baby feeding. That, no matter what the volume of subliminal  media messages conveyed, is their design function.

I can appreciate to an extent why some of an older generation may have reservations, but It was more widely acceptable many years before, but for some reason we appear to have back peddled.

Perhaps FHG over the years has taken a wiser course than others in generally being more positive in its posting, and not relying on certain types of headline threads, which  just become entrenched

Re: Breast feeding

Is it something to do with the length & feel of a bottle teat & the baby can't get the tongue & suck going properly causing more air intake .i know the modern teats are more like the real thing.but in reality they aren't to a baby that breast feeds.

Message to all:  If people want to call me an infantile MCP for making an inoffensive quip in response to somebody saying us men have forgotten what women's breasts are for, why should I worrry about it?  The poster of that thread didn't take offence or report me, so why shoud somebody be absolutely amazed I have not yet not only been reported but not been struck off the board permenantly.  If somebody wishes to report me over a joke, it's down to them, but this is a fee board and we live in an era of freeedom of speech - to a degree, anyway.  God what I am apologising for, but if anybody has taken offence in what I've said in the past - which is in the past, I'm sorry.  My conscience is clear.

There - does that make things better?  (Groan - roll eyes).

Re: Breast feeding

I didn't take offence Fred , you were trying to lighten the mood & I knew that , which is why I replied as I did, you have no need to apologise to anyone, you gave your opinion & clearly said you had no problem with BF as long as it was done discretely, but even if you disliked it that's also your right. xxx

Re: Breast feeding

http://www.itv.com/news/update/2014-12-06/mums-hit-back-at-claridges-by-staging-breast-in/ ...Mums are set to stage a "Free to Feed" protest at Claridge's today after the hotel asked a new mother to cover up as she breastfed. More than 150 women are due to turn up from 2pm to demand an apology. It comes after Ukip leader Nigel Farage appeared to agree with Claridge's policy by saying breastfeeding mothers should "sit in a corner". Free to Feed founder Emily Slough told ITV News: "Claridge's don't get to choose what is and what isn't discreet. "It's up to the breastfeeding mother and if she feels comfortable breastfeeding at a table, it's okay to do that." The backlash comes Claridge's staff asked mother Lou Burns to use a large napkin while breastfeeding so as not "caused offence" to other customers.

Re: Breast feeding

I think that's going overboard & will cause more problems, the picture of mum feeding her baby normally is discreet & I agree the napkin does draw attention .
