Well, I didn't go in completely, I decided just to go in enough to investigate the new chamber, which I did and it yielded something interesting! I'll upload the vid to YouTuber later tonight and post it to Twitter and suffice to say........ more digging for me to do

Now that sounds intriguing....

Sadly due to the rain last Sunday, I didn't go to start the digging, though this Sunday is a definite, hopefully I'll be down about 4ft after a couple of hours, I'll be bringing a much better spade than when I first started, which was a tiny fold away thing and with just that I managed to get down 3ft over two Sunday's. If all goes well, I should be down inside within a few weeks, if not two!

Will you be looking for evidence as to whether that fireplace is indeed one or the possible alternative you suggested of a chute for deliveries?
I personally think it is a fireplace.

I'll be looking for everything, what the gap was used for, the room itself, how it is accessed, does it go anywhere, everything I can! Despite it's barren appearance on the surface, this station area has turned up more surprises than any of the others I have been to!
21-12-2020 11:20 PM
It has to make one wonder how much is still intact in various other former stations as well?
22-12-2020 1:08 PM
Will depend on the station and how it was developed! Three station sites very near me I found parts buried under the soil and mud, including the lower parts of the platforms, but nothing really substantial like it is at Hyde Road. I actually plan on excavations at these close sites and a couple others, but I'll have to do it over a longer period, one or two sneaky spadefuls at a time, considering the sites!

I'm guessing, then, that they are not as remote and there are people watching?
23-12-2020 2:31 PM
Very much on public foot paths, unlike Hyde Road, where I am off the road and below the footpath, so I am quite out of view.... not completely, but just enough to avoid the gaze of others! Basically these others will just start appearing out of the mud and no-one will be the wiser as to who is doing it, or if it's just because of the rain etc, I'll take a couple of trowels worth of soil each time and put it in a plastic bag, then take it to the dump some time!
23-12-2020 10:42 PM
Ah, I see...
Now that would be interesting if any regular walkers past them are from the media; you'll wake up one morning and find headlines like "long lost rail station emerges from the mud!"

Well, I was hoping to just dig down onto the opening, but I hit a brick structure, so it looks like I'll have to extend my trench.... more and more work for me again!
05-01-2021 10:01 PM
Oh that's annoying! When is your next attempt? I'm guessing it counts both as archaeology ( i.e. work that cannot be done from home ) and excercise...?
06-01-2021 3:50 PM
Hmmm, not exactly sure when.... I was hoping to go back this weekend as it didn't look like it wasn't going to be as cold, but with the lockdown, I don't know if I'll be able to get away with it if I'm caught going to or from!

Is it within a reasonable distance to travel for excercise without going past other oppotunities to excercise?

I'm a little over 14 miles away from the site, so I don't think it could be considered reasonable distance to travel for exercise
07-01-2021 10:51 PM
Oh I'm not sure - in the first two lockdowns one of the Ministers was saying that as long as the journey time did not exceed the exercise time then it could probably be called reasonable. That assumes, of course, that there's nothing nearer in the samer direction that you would be going past on the way there.

Not that I'm aware of! I'll give Gorton a try, hopefully I don't get pulled on the M602, but once I get off that, I should be in the clear! Now, just to decided which spade I should bring with me!?

If you don't know the consistency of the soil, I'd go for a medium sized one?

Unfortunately new rules came in, so I was unable to go... I am really annoyed about it, I want to get there as soon as possible, even though the spot I'm digging at is further outside the development area, I'm concerned they'll get asked to fill them in, which will make my job take far longer and higher possibility of being spotted from the pavement!

Urgh... that's annoying... not a lot we can do about that unfortunately.
