Razor Blades

Hi I am being asked for the first time ever after buying razor blades online for the past five years for proof i am over 18. I am being asked for my full credit card number expiry date and last 3 security digits what seems to be from an ebay source, has this just been introduced ? I pay for items through Paypal so i don't have to give out details such as this ? Thank You

Re: Razor Blades

Hi @shaunhutch65 ,

Thank you for your post.

While this is not new eBay has expanded their policy on age verification on bladed items due to the UK online safety act. Keeping eBay a safe place to trade is our top priority and, as per UK law, it is an offence to sell knives or bladed items to a person who is under the age of 18. Credit cards are one of the standard methods for age verification because they are generally not available for people under 18 years of age.

Thank you,

Kat

Re: Razor Blades

Having recently discovered this change, I recently attempted to buy a bladed item from a private seller.

Despite entering CC details, I was met with a 'cannot verify' error or some such. I don't see any way around this. What could be the issue?

Given that eBay have messed this site up in just about every conceivable way, if I was asked to hazard a guess as to the reason why the "Cannot Verify" message appears on the screen when trying to enter credit card details, I'd say it's more than likely to be due to a bad bit of programming on eBay's part which they still haven't got around to resolving.

Regardless of whether my guess is right or wrong, I'd suggest that the best option would be not to bother with trying to buy bladed items off of eBay and instead try to buy them elsewhere, such as from a High Street retailer.  The best part of buying bladed items that way is that unless you're lucky enough to be over the age of eighteen yet you still look as though you haven't reached your eighteenth birthday, the most likely scenario is that you won't be challenged to provide ID to prove your age, and even if you were, you could easily pull out something with which to prove your age, such as a driving licence or a passport, at which point once you've proved that you're over the age of eighteen you shouldn't be met with any further resistance to purchasing the product.

Re: Razor Blades

Rather farcical when you've been a member / had an account for over 20 years?
Just another example of 'organisations' harvesting more personally identifying information than the need.

Re: Razor Blades

Hi @valdarniana-books ,

Thank you for your post.

One thing to check against a cannot verify error message would be the billing address entered for the card. Double check this is correct and try again.

Thank you,

Kat
