Proof of age. Neither my husband nor I own a credit card

Neither my husband nor I own a credit card and I want to bid on some cutlery, but as that includes a knife I have been asked to prove my age using a credit card. Is there another way to prove my age?

Thanks, Liz

eBay ask for a credit card for these purchases as you have to be over the age of 18 years to own a credit card,  and over 18 years to buy any ' bladed item'.

Anyone of any age can own a debit card.

But a credit card is not an acceptable proof of age, ebay are morons. They are breaking the law with this rule and its dangerous. Trading laws set what is acceptable forms of ID and a credit card is not. The government needs to deal with them they have broken trading laws so many times over the years. They are at it again

The only bit I’ve found on this is the following which is unlikely to satisfy due diligence

  • only accepting payment by credit card. Credit cards are not available to under 18s, but certain debit and prepaid cards are. Your payment systems are unlikely to be able to differentiate between the different types of cards, so it is essential that you have additional age verification in place

however, at this point in the process eBay aren’t only accepting payment by credit card, they are asking you to show you have a credit card on your name. This would show you have been through a check on a credit bureau which would have identified you are over 18. There is a fairly common age verification tool that does just that, checks your data against the credit bureaus.

i agree it’s bone headed not to accept ANY other form of proof and bone headed the list that they deem a bladed article, but the method they are using seems to just about cover their backs.

Go on the gov website no where is a credit card listed as an acceptable form of ID. Also not listed on trading law website. You can't go into tesco and buy a knife with a credit card as an ID. How is it covering their backs? Its not legal form of ID never has been never will be. Just because you have to be 18 to have one dosnt mean its ID does it. Unsure why they don't feel they have to follow the law.

I think ebay are relying on the credit card companies' ID process (to *not* give a credit card to an under 18) so they don't have to set up an (expensive) enhanced I.D. process of their own.

It is quite obvious that ebay have no confidence in their own, current ID process. Or they'd just use the fact that an ebay user has to be over 18 to have an account!   (ebay obviously know users are lying about age, but don't care...)

Just tried to buy a Makita cordless jigsaw (NO BLADES SUPPLIED) only to find I could not because im discriminated against for only having a debit card!! text with the customer services who didn't give any reasonable response other than its illegal to sell blades in the UK .

Yet whilst chatting I was able to purchase some jigsaw blades that the agent said was illegal to sell in the UK, I I gave him the listing number ive just purchased the blades on, then I got a full eBay user agreement text and the customer service agent said the add would be removed within 24hours. TO LATE IVE JUST BOUGHT BLADED ITEMS ON EBAY!!!  Sort yourselves out ebay your just becoming a bigger joke!!!

Yeah again you can't rely on someone else's ID process not how it works its the responsibility of the retailer this is all really clear in the trading law, they are breaking it. Credit card is not a form of ID hence why you credit card company wants a driving licence, passport, PASS ID, birth certificate, NI card. Retail stores have to follow no ID no sale. Credit card is not a valid form of ID.

Thats a joke, how funny that you was allowed to buy them whilst on the chat, shows how good the system they have is, They are doing such a bad job of this. Just do an ID check loads of systems that they can use to do this. Why they are not using one is beyond me, they just need to do the right thing and follow the law of the land!!

Pathetic answer.

So that's it is it ? No cuttlery or scissors.

I was asked to verify my age for a pair of garden secateurs.

I get it with all the knife crime but I mean who kills someone with pruning shears?

Have you never watched a horror film specifically a slasher flick, garden shears seem to be the weapon of choice!

Having a similar problem buying tools for work ,the fact I've been using my eBay account since 2004 would indicate some sort of maturity, the world we live in has no common sense

Well I've had my account for longer than I remember - never had a credit card and I feel there are a lot of people who have avoided the Credit Card trap too. I think sellers are going to have to change to a new platform to sell their goods 😕 Makes no sense to me!
