Insulting email from seller and claiming money back

Hi

i purchased 2 items from a buyer, both with ‘free’ postage.
I paid with my existing eBay balance so it wasn’t via PayPal or credit card.
Anyway I got a card from Royal Mail today saying they had a parcel for me with underpaid postage, however it didn’t give me any information on who the sender was so I paid the excess postage to get it so I could see who it was from.
I contacted the seller once I knew what it was. I asked that the excess postage be refunded to me, the seller refused and said I should have returned the parcel by refusing delivery and they would have refunded me, but I feel that’s unreasonable considering I didn’t know which parcel was the one with the issue.
I replied and said I wanted the money refunded as it is the seller’s responsibility to ensure postage is correct.
I got a very abusive response back basically telling me they wouldn’t refund it and calling me an insulting name.
I reported it to eBay as a seller not following the eBay seller rules, but I don’t know what if anything I can do about getting the excess postage back because I paid with my eBay balance. Any ideas?

Re: Insulting email from seller and claiming money back

Hi @nsix_54 , I'm not sure I can help much other than to say I would have done exactly what you did. Last time i did have an underpaid parcel, they wanted more than the actual value it was underpaid by as well. It wasn't just 30p. But my parcel was not an eBay one.

As a seller i would definitely refund you for my mistake. There is a chance Ebay set the postage rate and the RM have got it wrong and that is why the seller is annoyed.

Unless anyone can tell you anything different in the meantime I would contact eBay customer service tomorrow morning and ask what they suggest.

Re: Insulting email from seller and claiming money back

Hello

Do you know how to contact them? I just get stuck with the chatbot when I try and ask to speak to them.
The seller didn’t say they had used the rate eBay set, but in fairness I didn’t get a chance to ask them before they started being rude to me and I decided not to carry on arguing with them. I’ve never had such a horrible situation when buying off eBay.
Thanks
