Getting a bit sick of this over charged postage.

The last few months I've been buying from ebay quite frequenty. On some small items I've bought the postage has been set on the listing at £3.20 (Second Class Small Parcel). When the items arrive they have been sent as a Large Letter for £0.96p. I do know that postage includes packing as well. The latest parcel that I had arrive was just a very cheap jiffy bag. No extra bubble wrap or anything. So not a lot of cost with the packing. 20p at most.
Knowing these boards I know some my cry "Well you were happy to pay the postage price" and yes this is true I was happy to pay the postage price because I presumed it would be sent as a small parcel. The items I buy aren't that flat so I presume they would be over 2.5cms in depth. Perhaps the sellers thinks the item will have to sent as a small parcel hence the £3.20 Second Class postage price.
When these sellers post their parcels and find out it can be sent as a Large Letter and pay for that service they pocket that difference in cost and don't bother sending their buyer a message and say it was sent as a Large Letter and not a Small Parcel so here's a small refund. These people must think their buyers are stupid.
I also know these sellers have fees to pay but keeping the cost of postage that wasn't paid is all a bit of a con in my opinion. If it were me I'd partially refund the buyer.

the postage should include all materials used, most people know that packaging etc costs money so we're not too bothered.
We just don't to be obviously ripped off with it, over-charging a certain amount to keep half for themselves is taking the urine.

just paid £7 for a next day delivery for a record, it took over a week to come, and the postage on the parcel shows £3.55, no response from the seller and after being a member since 2005, I had to give my very first negative feedback.
if the seller does this to every buyer, its a nice little earner.....
(I also bought several other items 3 days after this, with second class postage, and they turned up 3 days before the record did)

Did the seller pay for special delivery?  There have also been two strike days between then and now.  Unless you know that the seller charged for special and sent it ordinary, then your feedback is harsh.

Seller's dispatch time may be a factor too. E.g. seller could state 5 days dispatch, and still have next day delivery, so you buy Monday, he sends Friday, you receive the next Monday.

Not saying this DID happen, as only you saw the item, but it's "possible".

Over promise, then under deliver = negative buyer experience, INR cases, unhappy buyers and sellers.
Under promise, then over deliver = Positive buyer experience, joy and happiness all round.
If only eBay could get their heads round this basic concept, this would be a happier place for all.

This is from the listing.

Estimated delivery using that postage and if bought today, is Dec 5th.

What courier was used and what did the label say?

I still think that the seller used the method they said they would, sent it when they said they would, and you have been unreasonable.

The items post said they used next day delivery by either Evri, DPD, or UPS. The couriers are so backlogged that their next day delivery takes days not hours.

That's not the sellers fault. Even Amazon are struggling.

Seems ebay are over inflating the P&P anyway. I find ebay and the other main online selling site to be quite expensive these days. True bargains are getting harder to find due to their charges.

My view here is the seller is just either greedy, lazy or both! Simple answer is don't use them again. I've always tried to be fair on postage charges especially since ebay took upon themselves to list their own postage costs. I'm the sort that would pay more for something if I'm dealing with a better seller.

eBay have nothing to do with P&P (apart from Global).

P&P is set by the individual seller, and is not under eBay's control.

Had a bit of a shock this morning with an item i bought. purchased some tropical fish off ebay and was charged £25 postage, special next day delivery, which i was a little suspicious was rather high. measured the box, weighed it and got a price off royal mail at just under £11 NOT £25 which is a ridiculous difference and two of the fish were dead! Not having that at all.

It seems to be the way now of charging a set amount e.g. small parcel & pack it as cheaply as possible. This overcharging is forming part of their profit.

Ebay used to penalise sellers for inflated postage prices.  They no longer care about it because they get their cut and it adds to their bottom line without them doing anything.

Hi

I have just contacted a seller re postage cost been apparently over inflated to actual cost of posting parcel. When I bid I assumed that because it was a heavy jacket that postage cost qouted was prehaps justified. However when I contacted the seller ,I was advised that the nearest Post Office was some 8 miles away, she acknowledged that this was not my problem but that was an additional cost to her in postage. I have given a Neutral Review  and thru feedback pointed out to future Buyers that they perhaps need to take this into consideration when bidding. As others have commented on actual Postage charge against listed Postage charge you can view this from two sides. I personally do not like the thought that Buyers maybe are being ripped off.

Good point! So perhaps sellers to should state their could be extra costs due to their logistics? Bring back the old ebay.

So they charged you £8.05 for second class signed for which would be £4.45 for a small parcel minus fees leaves £2.27 for packing.

Or as it's a coat it could have been a medium parcel at £6.45 minus fees leaves 27p for packing.

And you really genuinely think you are being ripped off?

postage shown, on checkout the cost of the purchase was 49 pounds, you can
guess what i did with that order, its a complete scam, the cost of postage

If Royal Mail had made more profit would that make you happier with the A&F jacket?

Nowadays they would be committing a serious violation of policy if they did.

Ah, this takes me back! Long ago, when a seller could produce a P&P chare after you bought, this produced my only non-payment strike in 21 years, which eBay removed on request, along with the froth-spattering negative feedback sellers could then leave.

He tried for three times the P&P feedback on a micrometer which others were charging, and I had the 1in. version of his 25mm, one in front of me. His explanation was that his logistics, or words to that effect, required him to pay for petrol to the post office and parking there. Such items are pointedly absent from the Selling Practices Policy.

Google maps and street photography, then a novelty, showed a small post office with free parking two minutes from his home by Google's estimation, on quiet suburban streets. When I pointed this out, he said he didn't use that post office, because he had so many other things to do in town. Part of that would be posting several other items he sold that weekend.

That was the old eBay.

Another point rmc1311 raise is that we sometimes don't know the weight of an item, or its weight and dimensions when packed. eBay won't enforce any request for some of your money back, and I don't know how valid it was with the jacket, but there is no question of your being wrong in making a polite, non-threatening suggestion.

It is certainly true that the charge is displayed, and it is just common sense to consider it before choosing to buy. But there is no question of your decision making the seller innocent of any illicit profit which results. He chose that amount before the listing existed, and choosing it is the offence. Total cost to buy? They frequently don't make the BIN price low in proportion, and an auction seller doesn't know to what selling price his P&P charge will be added.

It is not a fantasy, it happens regularly. Some greedy sly sellers are doing it on purpose & EBay should be putting a stop to it.
