Buyer protection fees

I am a collector of small value items, post cards, cigarette cards, tea cards and over 15 years I have spent thousands of pounds on ebay on my hobby. Most purchases are well under £5.00.

I will not pay an extra 75p plus 4% to purchase these low value items. On some items it will virtually double the cost. I do not need this buyer protection. I have never had a problem with private sellers who are fellow collectors in all these years

I also sell items surplus to my collection for low value. I am not a business. There is no point in me doing so anymore, especially with having to wait 14 days to be paid.

Clearly ebay are no longer interested in collectors and after all these years of changes every couple of months, this is the last straw for me and I'm finished with ebay

Buyer protection fees

The MBG is the " protection" always has been.

Nothing about the BPF offers any protection.

Business sellers already have to comply with consumer law and legalities and eBay cannot charge a fee for something that already exists for business sellers customers.

Genuine good private sellers honour their buyers, they still can be subjected to INR and INAD claims... ...the only area not covered is "change of mind"  purchases, because they are NOT running a business...it is then up to the seller whether to honour that or not.

They also can not misrepresent items for sale, which is why I fail to understand those using A.I. as they do not describe in full or condition etc ( those which I have seen) so sellers are opening themselves up for INAD claims.

Buyer protection fees

Ebay have always offered buyer protection via their "money back guarantee".  They also provide some protection for sellers.  This is supposed to be a reason for using eBay rather than directly buying from or selling to someone you don't know.

In the past, this was obviously funded by part of the sellers fee (the rest paying eBay's operating costs and providing them with their profit).

If my calculations are correct, if the "Buyer protection" fee is a flat rate of 75 + 4%,  eBay will now take a larger fee than the previous seller's fee on any private sale of less than £4.54.  For example.  For an item price of £4, the old charge to the seller was 86p, now the buyer will pay 91p (an increase of 9.4%).  For a £2 item the old seller's fee was 61p . Now, the buyer will pay 79p (an increase of 29.5%).  For a £1 item, old charge 48p, new charge 79p, (an increase of a truly massive 64%)

Could the fact that many private sales are for low value items and eBay will now take much higher fees be the real reason for the change?

Buyer protection fees

Attitudes as such provide a green light to such decisions!
