If you opened a return request for the correct reason (not as described) you would not be asked to pay for the return. The seller would be forced to pay. Buyers only pay for change of mind, does not fit, and buyer error returns. What reason did you chose from the list that Ebay presented you with...?

You should open a claim for Not As Described using the eBay 30 Day  Money Back Guarantee.

Your seller will then send you a prepaid label for the return.

Don't open any other type of claim or you will end up paying postage.

Even if you did open the wrong case, it is the sellers mistake and he should morally send you the postage, to return.

If he has sent your item to someone else, then the seller will find it an expensive mistake, which is the most effective way of learning not to do it again.

If you have opened an Item Not As Described case then the seller has to pay the cost of the return postage by providing you with an eBay Returns Label.  If you opened an Item Not As Described Case in the eBay Resolution Centre but the seller is telling you that you will have to pay for the return postage then you have two options.  The first would be to contact eBay Customer Services, using the Call Me Back option, and quote the item listing number relating to the item that you want to return to the seller.  This will help the eBay representative to locate the item faster.  Explain to the eBay representative that the seller has failed to provide you with an eBay Returns Label so that you can return the item for a refund and eBay ought to sort you out with a prepaid eBay Returns Label so that you can return the item to the seller.  The seller will have to pay for the label, not you, so don't let him/her mislead you into believing that you've got to pay for the returns postage yourself.

The second option available to you if you've opened an Item Not As Described case is to escalate the case to eBay after three business days have passed from the date that you opened the case.  If you did have to do that then eBay would force a total refund of the money that you paid to the seller and you would not have to return the item.

In the event that you opened the wrong type of case - for example, if you opened a Returns Request, which is the type of case you would open if you'd just changed your mind and wanted to return the item - then you can't open a second eBay case in relation to the same transaction, so once the case has closed log into your PayPal account, locate the transaction in question and open an Item Not As Described case there.  Unlike eBay, if you have to return the item to the seller then PayPal will require you to pay for the return postage, although they do tend to look into cases far more thoroughly than eBay do, in which case you ought to stand a strong chance of being able to get your money back.

Should you end up having to go down the PayPal route in order to secure a refund make sure that you escalate the case after two days but before the twenty day cut-off point.  If you do that then you should be able to get your money back; however, if you leave it any longer than twenty days before you decide to escalate the case to PayPal then the case will automatically close and you will not be able to open another case in relation to the same transaction in order to get your money back.
