If there were problems before your son cracked the screen that would have been the time to put in your claim.
I'm afraid no warranty is going to cover a cracked screen and your seller will most probably argue any associated problem is also down to your son.
Dependent on the price you paid it may be possible to look at your household insurance cover.
Didn't you think to tell us when you bought this phone? All your rights on eBay depend on this.
I will assume that it was over 30 days ago, which is the time limit to use eBay's money back guarantee.
PayPal will probably have rejected your claim because, like eBay, they only cover the condition of items on delivery. They're not a warranty, and don't cover faults that develop in use.
Any liability now rests with the seller. If they are a UK business seller you should in theory have the same statutory consumer rights as if you bought it from a shop. In practice, many eBay sellers don't want to know about problems. Even manufacturers' warranties are often invalid for items bought here.
You can take advice from trading standards or citizens advice. Or, consider using the small claims court or the Courts and Tribunals internet based money claim service, see: https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/web/mcol/welcome.
It the seller is a private seller or abroad, there's nothing you can do.
Good luck, but this is one of the risks of buying from unknown sellers on eBay. EBay isn't like the shops.
Bought in January, yet you only report the fault in April or May? That fully explains why your case was turned down, Ebay and Paypal protection only cover the condition on receipt, not something that happens later. If there was a fault when you got it, that was the time to take action. Suggest you read Ebays Money Back Guarantee.
Any warranty is between you and the seller, but often they are only as good as your ability to enforce them.
