What exactly is a Sponsored Item?

I've bought a sickle whish is supposed to be coming tomorrow - it says it is a "Sponsored Item"  What exactly does that mean?

The term "sponsored item" is misleading. It just means that the seller is paying eBay an extra fee to promote their item.

For a company that calls postage "free" when it's included in the price, this is par for the course.
