Has anyone ever experienced an additional charge when buying on e bay.

Hi

I am looking for some help contacting paypal as i have been trying unsuccesfully for the last month to query a significant overpayment. I bought an item from a buyer in Japan and when i checked the transaction it was 300 pounds more than what i had offered. I was told to phone them but keep on getting disconnected and their e mail customer services are telling me i need to speak to them so can not help.  I have also contacted e bay help and they are unwilling to help until i have spoken to paypal.  I have sent the item back as was so fed up but i was not refunded the full amount.  Any ideas would be very welcome

Have you considered that the additional charges may be due to Currency conversion and Import taxes due to HMRC which you as the importer are responsible for payment ... nothing to do with Seller.

Hopefully you used the formal eBay options when you returned the item ... any claim for refund of Import fees will need to be processed through HMRC >

... and for PayPal within 180 days from expected delivery ...

Was the seller enrolled in the GSP?  Your offer would not include any shipping

neither would it include any import taxes

you need to give more details

Hi

Could it be the extra was a shipping charge for example the import taxes perhaps?

Did it give a breakdown on the invoice at all.

When buying from overseas it is the importer who is responsible for paying all the import duties.

I found this rough example taken from another member who posted this as an example of how it would work, they did make it clear this was a ball park figure but it should give you some idea

If you buy a guitar for £750 then I think you should estimate the following:
Guitar: £750
Import VAT (20%): £150
Royal Mail fee: £8
Customs Duty (calculated at minimum 2.5% from info available): £18.75
TOTAL: £926.75
