Ebay and Paypal in contradiction?

I have bought an item on Ebay and paid via Paypal, but on my Ebay it says payment pending and on my Paypal it says paid. I've emailed the buyer and they have said that they have received a notification saying payment has cleared in their account. So why would it say payment pending on my Ebay account?

I'm replying under the assumption that the seller has been switched to Ebay's Managed Payments system (you can tell that they have if extra payment options are available on their listings). If so, the Ebay transaction will only show as 'pending' for a very short while, while Ebay processes the payment.

Ebay is switching every seller from PayPal's payment processing system to their own Managed Payments system. So when a buyer uses PayPal with a seller who has been switched to Managed Payments, the payment goes to Ebay's PayPal account from your PayPal account, before landing in the seller's Ebay account.  That can cause a short delay in the payment status updating at the buyer's end. It's usually just a few seconds or minutes, but may take a little longer at very busy times (like the weekend).

But if it's still showing as 'pending' in your Ebay account today, come back for further advice.
