Share your tips for increasing sales

Good afternoon to you all

it's very easy to get bogged down with negativity. I for one have in recent times been quite negative, but this morning I had a sale and yesterday I had 3 so I've decided to try and be positive in these uncertain times

so I thought it would be a good idea to start a positive post

would anyone like to share your tips for increasing sales. Something that has worked for you maybe or something you are trying to see if it has results

I know there's no magic wand to be waved but let's see if we can try to improve our sales by sharing the love

my first tip is to use sell similar on ended listings and to change just one thing. I think in the past I have been very complacent and just need to up my game a bit. I've been taking fresh photos of ended items to refresh the listing

over to you

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

Right I’m ready for this weekend! Had a good day so far, conversion rate is 11%. Got to keep the momentum going so Sale is on, and those that can’t be added to a sale I relented and sent offers on.

I’m all up for dumping a certain category of mine and focusing on the things I actually love selling.

Add to the fact -this is O/T- I watched Netflix ‘Buy Now’ last night and was suitably guilt tripped.

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

Buy Now is going to have to wait until this seasons peek passes!  Has eBays survey 'What can we do to help your small business with sustainability practices' hit you email inbox?

Its no bad thing for even us micro business' to reflect on our practices, but by the nature of being micro I think we're naturally more frugal and in touch with our stock/ supplies/excess'

Good luck with this weekend.  I've traditionally not found this black Friday weekend that good (too much competition) but this year the combination of lots of new stock, payday, black Friday and a coupon I seam to have been rushed off my feet.

Another seller, I think a board lurker, just sent me a newsletter talking about double stacking discounts.  It made me smile and think of all the great pointers everyone has shared.

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

The mention of newsletters reminded me of something I forgot to say. You can only send a newsletter to your selected groups once every 2 weeks (I think). So that's another thing to consider if timing a newsletter for payday etc. Something I aim to do asap is create more buyer groups (men vs women etc) and maybe do a targeted newsletter/offer to a select group mid-month and a general newsletter/offer at the end of the month. So most people only get one offer once a month at payday.

Apologies for not answering. I only came here to bump this thread because it completely and utterly does my head in, how can a thread on 'tips for improving ebay' (which you can't control) be consistently at the top of the business seller board, whilst a thread 'on tips for increasing sales' (which you can at least try and control), always sinks onto page two within days? I know, I know, a rhetorical question, its because they think ebay has taken their control away from them... they're wrong... it's just not as easy as it used to be.

I've had a good old moan about search (its still broken) private sellers registered as businesses and promoted listings. But if I just carry on moaning about those things and sit down and reply to every post and comment agreeing with the next moaner, I am not achieving anything at all towards my business.

This November my sales are up now over 100% on last year. They've more than doubled. It's insane.
Last year I was promoting and this year I am not. Based on last years promoted rate, my banked revenue after Ebay fees is over £2500 higher than it would have been if I had promoted at last Novembers rate.

I don't have anyone to thank for my sales other than me really. It isn't luck, I've worked blinkin' hard to change things up, source new things, try new methods and its worked.

To continue with advice previously given, I can't stress enough how people need to build a brand.

I guarantee that most of the small business sellers that are doing well have a good number of followers and are well-known to their customer base within that category.

One more point - sell things no one else has and focus on what people want, learn from buying patterns and behaviours and adjust accordingly. Job lot and get rid of the stuff that doesn't sell or that has been lurking. I found my sales increased a lot when I maintained a listing QTY of around 1500-1700 items rather than 2200-2500.

Grrrr! You drive me up the wall with your non-promoted listings 😀 ! You know I tried it, and you know it ruined my organic views as well. A bit of me wants to give it another try now, now I am selling well. Because when I trialled it in the summer, my sales were already rubbish, and reducing PL just made them even worse.  It would be 'fair' to trial it again now. But I admit, I don't have the courage. If it aint broke, don't fix it, is my motto. And at the moment with zero fees - I have to try and shift stock - because who knows what is coming next year...

Anyway, thanks for a good post, great to hear you are doing well.

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

Thank you, I have similar thoughts on whether I should turn promoted back on to my older stock to help it clear out but I have that fear of switching it back on and being stuck in that pattern of having to promote higher and higher and higher.

If your margins can take it, I would keep promoting based on what happened to you last time. Unless you could perhaps get a selection of a percentage of your listings to turn it off on and see what happens to those?

You have been very fortunate to benefit from not having to pay any final value fees in the run up to Xmas. Many businesses have not had that luxury.....how are you going to get on in January when you will have to pay final value fees again?

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

I have enormous respect for sheba-knows-best, anyone whose kept their head up, doesn't let the changing climate drag them down and has pushed on many months after clothing sales became free to private sellers has my respect.  The few months of free fees hopefully help to offset some of the months of pain and turmoil they've undergone whilst the marketplace finds its new level.

My area, Jewellery, has seen a fee hike - 2% more than other categories.  I don't resent those business' who've got it free though.  We each have to sit down and carefully do our own numbers.  Mine stack up.  November 24, with much help from those on this thread, a lot of work on stock and no doubt a bit of luck (because we all know working hard isn't necessarily enough) has been my most successful November yet.

My plan for December is three coupons, several sales (so I cover all stock right up to Christmas), I think I can fit two last newsletters in, regular bulk offers, continuing to list every last refound item in my currently slightly tidier office.  I'm going to push on with discounts and double deals between Christmas and New Year because these have been great selling times the last two years.  I haven't had a chance to do a January plan yet - anyone else had January thoughts?

I'm still trying to work out what to do about GPSR and turning off NI - I think I've negotiated a reputable responsible person for all low risk products (10,000 units per year) for 100 Euro/ year (£84) just running a bit of due diligence.  I believe they are on eBay and Amazon supplier list for other services.  Not sure how adding manufacturer information or changing postal policies will upset my marketing plan - specifically discount sales.

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

Sheeba is seasoned poster, always willing to help and support, take the balance of her posts historically you will see they are striaght talking, supportive and very, very giving of a deep insight into her succesffull business, with years of experience of selling on the platform.

She been open in telling how shes made a success, completely open, if you or other forum users see that as something else then more fool you.

100% sure a pathetic attempt to rile will be water of a ducks back and seen for what it is

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

I seem to remember Sheba has said before that she deliberately stifles her sales sometimes to stay under the VAT threshold limit so to be fair I don’t think the zero eBay fees are make or break.

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

Do you think the passing of GPSR December 13th will be a smooth transition?

Forgetting this platform do you think when the regulations come in it will go smooth or will it create issues/returns, I've dipped in and out so not really sure of the bigger picture outside Ebay so to speak.

The boards are what we as sellers have to do, do you know what receiving countries/customs are doing?

I cant supply the information but it is intersting to a degree, the work/costs sellers are putting into making this work for them, hope it goes smooth, blige if it doesnt it will be a nightmare

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

I turned promotions off a couple of months ago  but decided to test putting them back on on a few selected listings. I did sell one of those promoted items  but I must admit I haven’t been flooded with sales.
im inclined like you to maybe promote the listings which haven’t had sales for some time. I’m also doing a few pre Christmas price reductions  so I’ll test how that does   I’ve been ending listings tweaking and sell similar which has been reasonably successful

Well... you wander off to deal with Black Friday/cyber Monday  and come back to find your name has been dragged through the mud (presumably, though as the post was moderated, I'll never know.)

Regarding your question, and how I will cope in January when fees resume? Well, I guess like I coped for the last god-knows-how-long when private sellers have been on 80% off FVFs. My category has always been one of the most saturated by private/business sellers.  Same old, same old, yawn.

Of more interest, perhaps,  is the effect of zero fees on a consistently profitable pre-loved clothing business during this zero fee period. I immediately set up a calculator to compare profit with zero fees vs profit with usual fees. Meaning I chose to pass on much of my unexpected bonus to buyers as discounts in an effort to 'ditch' old stock and gain new followers, so that I am in the best possible shape for 2025. I have also trialled promoted offsite, differing PL levels, promoted shop, and discounts teamed with coupons teamed with newsletters; all of which ebay has supported with 1:1 support and further fee offers. So my fees to ebay since 'zero fees' have not fallen to zero, but have rather shifted from a previous 18-24% to more like 12-15% in advertising spend. Some might say I have wasted my money. However, I have seen comments from other pre-loved clothing sellers on these boards along the lines of "what is the point of zero fees when you don't have sales?". Well, I have had no shortage of sales and like I say, because of my work, I am hopeful for 2025.

On a side note, if I have used the opportunity to discount (and have ended the year strongly) then I can only think other clothing sellers have too. Meaning we probably gave Vinted a run for its money. So I think ebay's strategy achieved exactly what it wanted. It has survived to fight another day.  And maybe, just maybe, it has seen some sellers are willing to work with it, and voluntarily pay fees in other ways if they buyers keep buying.

So what will ebay do next? Well, if I had a bunch of 'employees' moaning about their poor salaries, I would never, ever, give them a rise for three months then take it away again. So I predict some kind of buyer (and possibly seller) fee per transaction to replace zero fees. (Although what will happen in other categories to preloved I don't know; possibly it is having a rival, like Vinted, that makes ebay fight to keep its sellers; because it has to.)

I am, incidentally, humbled by the kind words of other sellers in my absence. Thank you.

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

Nearly at the end of 2024 and for a lot of people it’s been a challenging year.

I have been experimenting with promoted listings in the last few months. This time last year all my listings were promoted but I became quite concerned with the level of fees so decided to remove all the promotions and profits rose on the sales I made. I decided on the run up to Christmas to experiment and selected a particular design which was not selling to promote listings. Not by a great amount the highest I did was 5%. I’m happy to say that sales in this section have increased. I have decided to rotate these promotions and see if this trend continues on my less popular listings. I will keep a month by month check and hopefully as I’m reporting now these slower lines will begin to sell

id like to thank everyone who has continued to contribute to this post. In a challenging year keeping things fresh is the way we can move forward into 2025.
may 2025 be a prosperous one and a Happy New Year

Re: Share your tips for increasing sales

How was everyones Christmas period, good I hope

1st Nov/Dec 31st Views and Sales the same as 2023 ish

20% drop in impressions,

Trying to get my head around that, its either a reduction in PL and or PL Standard rate or the fact that for this period I stopped ending and sell similar with the chain of thought that these items might be in baskets/watching eg leave them in a place where the customer knows.

Hindsight, think that was the wrong thing to do,

So I stopped sell similar from about November the 1st, so from December 1st the decline is obvious as the listings enter its 2nd cycle without refresh, the slope only goes in one direction....... Seems a bit hardcore for what should be a busier period
