Returns From Australia to UK

I sold a DVD box set in immaculate condition to an Australian buyer who now falsely claims the item is not as described and wants to return it.  

Rather than let him keep it for free, I'd rather have it back.  My understanding is that I need to supply a return label, but I am unsure how to do this.

Can anyone help?

Okay - I haven't had this issue for a year or so, and I only ever had it with the USA and Ireland. But - what I used to be able to see was a box you could press to say 'could not send a label' or something like that. I would press that and then email the buyer saying "so sorry, because I am too small a seller for an international account, it is impossible for me to buy a label in your country so please get a postage quote". Then offer to pay the buyer via Paypal (or a mutually agreed way) as soon as you agree the postage quote and the buyer shows the photograph of the receipt (showing your address).

 

Fill this in on the ebay return case page: "I have reached out to the buyer to pay for a return label".  No matter how many excuses the buyer makes for not being able to purchase postage, get a quote etc etc you must reply to every message saying something like  "I am reaching out to help you return this item."  Never leave a message (whether within the case or just ebay messages) unanswered. If the buyer seems to be waiting for the case to 'time out' to get a free refund, make sure you ring CS to get a block on an automated refund.

 

This has worked for me on all occasions. Most buyers decided to keep the item after all - a couple did return at my expense. Usually, as well, with the increase in communication you will get a clearer idea to whether a buyer is definitely trying for a freebie. 

 

Worth a try anyway?

I haven't normally had an issue with this if you show them the detailed message exchange - whether within the return case or in messages which proves you have 'reached out' to the buyer.

 

So if the buyer doesn't respond to your messages - even better - just keep messaging them, maybe twice a day for two days, before contacting CS to show that your buyer is not working with you to get the postage sorted.

I see that Sendle offers returns from Australia.  Apparently the packet can be dropped off anywhere within the wide-ranging Hubble network.  Prices don't look too bad and as far as I am aware payment can be made via a UK debit card or PayPal.

I will explore this further and update my findings.  (Pretty certain that the "customer " is fishing for a freebie.)

You may be right davrman,  but I'm prepared to take a bit of a hit on this one.  Essentially I'm spending a little time figuring it all out for future reference in case a similar scenario arises again.  I've been caught once or twice before with international returns (that were not returned!) and I want to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

I'm viewing the whole thing as a learning experience, unpleasant as it is!

Over the years I have had it a few times (not too many) and rather than letting them keep it for free where I have a strong suspicion a buyer is taking the Michael and trying for a freebie I have always preferred to take a small hit and cover the return postage even where the cost of the return postage is a little higher than the cost of me replacing the item. For a start they will have the inconvenience of waiting a couple of weeks to get the refund and it may stop them from trying it on in the future. 

 

The advice Sheba gave you is spot on although not sure the box for 'could not send a label' still exists.

I messaged the buyer:  "Please get a quote from your local post office for the cost of returning the item to the UK, tracked obviously. I am happy to reimburse you the cost of postage."

 

His reply: "I have bought many items on ebay/ When a defective/damaged item has been sent to me in the past on rare occassions the seller has graciously offered a partial refund and told me to keep the item in the name of good customer service."

My response:

 

Dear buyer. I am sure it will surprise you to hear, but a few buyers claim the item is not as described on every single purchase they make, which is why I prefer to offer full refunds on safe receipt of the returned item to make things fair for honest buyers.

 

Sorry that a few bad eggs ruin a wonderful site for the rest of us, but rest assured, ebay records each return case on a buyer's account, so gradually the bad eggs are weeded out and have their right to returns removed. Best wishes again, Sheba x
