Private sellers to have sales funds held

Changes from now for new private sellers and from next year for existing private sellers means their funds from a sale won't be available until after delivery but no change to business sellers availability next day.  Seperate to this eBay are also mandating UK Private Sellers will all have to use eBay Managed Shipping

I wonder if this will encourage more private sellers who should be a business to convert..

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

Actually you probably could! I have screenshot/photographed QR codes on my phone and used them.  This tech revolution is getting a bit much at times ...

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

I printed a label for a neighbour whose wife had sold something on Vinted.  It was an RM T48 label, but the banner was InPost Locker.

Confusing.  Do RM parcels also go in these lockers?

I can understand the advantage of lockers to the buyer, particularly if they live in an apartment that doesn't have a concierge service, but they seem to be an awful lot of bother for the seller.

Sadly that idea is too simple, eBay would have to make a whole legion of staff redundant from the "let's make everything complicated as possible " department.

InPost contracts "locker to door" deliveries to Royal Mail hence the label looks like a Royal Mail one.

However these items can only be dropped off at InPost points, not Royal Mail points. They are collected by InPost drivers and handed over to Royal Mail at a later point.

Confusingly InPost Lockers are now often in car parks right next to the new Royal Mail lockers. I would hope the locker would reject attempts at putting in the wrong service, but who knows.

My main issue with the "Simple Delivery" concept though is:

  • I use stamps for most of my postage which I get for free, part paying over the counter at the Post Office to get a delivery confirmation 2D barcode. This uses up my stamps and means I'm able to subsidise postage fees for my buyers
  • Most of my items are cheap so I do not need the compensation levels of Tracked
  • Simple Delivery doesn't offer large letter pricing, as I'm mostly selling cheap books now these are often 500g or 750g large letters. Buyers will end up paying for parcel sizes needlessly

And despite being a private seller, I still need to compete on pricing against big business sellers, particularly book resellers, for example, so my items actually sell. Assuming Simple Delivery lists a price of £3-4 to a buyer, this is double what it might actually cost to ship. I'll then have to drop my price below them and make even less. The majority of my books are only going for £10-20, only just worth selling as it is. Beyond this most regular sellers know there are far cheaper ways to ship some items, eg Parcel2Go do a 1kg parcel for £2.65.

This is before the fact that the current Simple Delivery set up ONLY offers QR code drop offs at Evri or Royal Mail points, and no pick up options (despite Royal Mail pickups being free). Currently I don't mind the Post Office queue because I am using up my stamps. But with this option I am now wasting even more time because eBay's system doesn't actually offer the postage options that the courier provides themselves!

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

I have two packages to go to the shop up the road for V. I cannot get out of the house as broke 3 ribs (possibly coughing in bed). Sister won’t help as she’s lazy.
I prefer RM collecting from the house. No hassle and no walking to the store.

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

Plus as I recall there’s no inpost lockers near me. The nearest ones are around 1/2 an hour away. No way I’m taking a taxi there and back as it’s in a no go area estate. The lockers all seem to be raided as always open with clothes etc strewn inside them.

so it’s definitely a no from me. Prefer RM pick up from doorstep.

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

Messing around and changing postage on eBay is a very bad move by eBay.

Millions of people are used to how things are now and they have always worked very well for the majority of genuine sellers on eBay who just want things straight forward and simple.

Convenience is a very important factor and if eBay start dictating what postal service I can and can't use and if they start holding my funds unduly I will have no choice but to stop selling on eBay and sell my stuff on another site where I have liberty and my sales money is not tied up for a long time.

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

There is no way I am using eBay to organise my shipping.  Evri are absolutely rubbish and constantly try to add charges once the parcel is sent.  Yodel leave parcels for porch pirates and the others are too expensive.  I use Royal Mail directly and I’m sticking with it!

I really appreciated eBay making it free to sell, but it seems that came with a hidden agenda of complications!!! I’m not looking to wait for a parcel to be delivered to get paid. If I order an item from a store I have to pay for it before it’s delivered.  EBay will get my payment before it’s delivered, why shouldn’t I???

if eBay is having a problem with scammers on its site, it’s for them to rectify not me or other sellers.

when you speak to eBay on the phone, they thank you for your years of loyalty with them.  Well thank me by not putting this ridiculous plan in place.

I had no plans to leave eBay, but I do now!  I know I can use Vinted for clothing.  Anyone recommend other selling sites for household items?

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

I know. Think of all the interest they’ll get from all this money floating around waiting to be sent to the buyer.
You could be up to two weeks waiting for payment. Overseas sales will stop now for me.
it was ok as it was.

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

I've delisted all my sale items on ebay. After 20+ years of private selling roleplaying games etc on ebay that's me done.

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

So sad! They don’t seem to consider the private sellers at all anymore!  Over the past couple of weeks I have really struggled with how aggressively eBay seems to be turning against its private sellers.  I wonder if the ultimate goal is to get rid of private sellers completely.

Re: Private sellers to have sales funds held

if I buy an item from eBay I would not expect that item to be shipped to me until I have paid for it. I think it is very unfair that eBay expects sellers to send items without being paid, or making them wait 3-5 days or longer to receive payment!

I will be opting out of simple delivery for all my items!  You don’t have to use it!

I am only keeping my things on here until I find an alternative suitable root to sell them.
