POOR SALES = MORE BUYERS NO LONGER USING EBAY?

So I managed to find some info on yesterday's eBay 2021 Q4 Results.

It came as no suprise to me - after seeing my own declining site sales last year - that again for the third consecutive quarter that the "Number of Active Ebay Buyers" has fallen down to 147million, an overal yearly decline of nearly 10% .

2021 Q2 = 156million

2021 Q3 = 152million

2021 Q4 = 147million

2021 Q1 = 163million.......................2021 Q4 = 147million  (-9.8%)

While I am no fan of eBay and the manner it treats it's sellers - I would not like to see the site fail.

Why do buyers appear to be deserting eBay?

We need the answer fast and eBay need to find a solution even faster to help save our businesses.

Is the current "eBay search" (The Sales Prevention Tool) to blame?...........................or is it something else?

Answers on a postcard please!

POOR SALES = MORE BUYERS NO LONGER USING EBAY?

Couple of weeks back on a Sunday evening I realised needed some new shoes to go with my suit as I had a funeral to go to in the week.

Mrs went on Amazon ordered them straight away & they arrived Monday 11am!

There is no way Ebay can compete with that, so instead of giving false EDDs that annoys the customers (& sends them to Amazon the next time) be honest & most customers will be happy with a realistic time.

Its been said many times EBay is not Amazon & will never be.

Totally agree, it doesn't take long with SM and word of mouth for most of the country to become aware that whatever ebay says the delivery date should be, it's more than likely that it won't arrive on time.

It's pure stupidity to tell my buyers that RM 2nd Class will arrive next day.  It makes me look unreliable, ebay look like it is lying and invites the obvious comparison with amazon who WILL deliver next day.

Active buyers is now down to 132 million.

I've read that active buyers reached an all time high of about 179 million in 2018. This means that since 2018 ebay has lost 47 million (or just above 26%) active buyers. It is a global figure and we have no idea of what the .uk numbers are, but that's a lot of buyers who have gone missing/elsewhere.

I can't imagine any other company losing 26% of its buyers and not stopping to think that we better rethink out plans.

Nightmare @1956glyn   sorry to see you lay down the cards and leave eBay as a seller.

Neither can I, but this is ebay. The CEO has made remarks in the past about low value buyers and we are seeing the fruits of policies that concentrate on certain categories - vehicle parts, trainers (I'm sorry I just can't call them sneakers), luxury goods, watches, fashion, trading cards all spring to mind.

There have been times when a number of sellers have posted about leaving, but in twenty years I can't remember another period when there have been so many.

Ebay has two options. 1. Get more buyers and sellers to use the platform, or 2. Squeeze a bit more out of those that already pay.

It seems clear that they have decided to go for option 2.

Some decent advertising campaigns wouldnt go a miss! In the run up to Christmas the only ad i saw for Ebay was  of a woman who needed a spanner or racket to fix her car! Whilst on you tube in the last days i am seeing adverts for Amazon and Vinted both adverts short and well to the point.

If the people aren't watching TV then advertise on You Tube. Where are the Ebay advertising campaigns and who are they targeting? We won't spend huge amounts to promote our listings if Ebay isn't getting the users. I decided i am definately cutting back my promo spend as i can no longer afford pushing 30% per month on fee's for not enough reward.

Largely due to the lack of being heard, the fees, the being taken for a ride by buyers with little or no support from ebay, we have been running down our stock since last autumn and will be closing our ebay shop as soon as the stock allows it.

We have been trading on ebay since 2004, with 100% feedback on over 26,000  (plus) transactions but no more - we have had enough and it is goodbye ebay. We wish we could say it has been good.......

Regarding your response "hell," the strain versus benefit balance rendered the operation of my business, initially full-time and then part-time, no longer feasible. The issues have been extensively highlighted by numerous sellers, yet eBay has consistently disregarded them. The company's tactics are unethical, particularly in these turbulent times, and the platform appears outdated with a visibly patched-together backend. I anticipate a web3-based alternative to eBay that addresses these concerns in the future. With the advancements in technology (including ai), it's only a matter of time before someone develops a concept to finally put an end to eBay.

Well in India they now have a service/app called Blinkit that literally can order anything and have it delivered in under 10 minutes (check out mrwhostheboss video on youtube).

And it looks to me that concentrating on those selected areas patently isn't working.  Those categories are said to be growing but overall sales are shrinking (or flat this quarter).  So where's the sales growth associated with them.

The only revenue that's increased for several previous quarters has been PL revenue.   A  few sellers have posted that they get good results from the extra money paid out, which is fair enough (speculate to accumulate).  But it seems to me that most only promote because they think they have to, to get any sales at all.  So are effectively promoting, not to grow their business, but in an attempt to keep dieing (or being strangled) businesses afloat.

To me it's a ludicrous situation.  Ebay is killing off viable businesses by denying them sales.  Destroying private sellers sales by swamping them with promoted listings, effectively hiding them.  Loosing all the fees derived from all those sales, in an effort to bludgeon fee paying sellers into paying to promote for a short-term gain.

Ebay needs to wake up to the fact that there is no longer an endless queue of new sellers.  If there were, why are seller numbers falling?  They should be being replaced from 'the queue'.  It's not so difficult to find alternatives these days, so once gone, they probably won't be back.

POOR SALES = MORE BUYERS NO LONGER USING EBAY?

I have finally had enough of eBay. I'm sick and tired of eBays size 10 boot continuously pressing down on me and my business.   😒

Due to retirement and increased bad health this year I will be running down my ebay shop and concentrating on my own Squarespace hosted website/shop which I opened last week. OK to start with it will be quite hard work to fill my shop with listings but my destiny will be - to a greater extent -  in my own hands once again with just monthly shop subscription fees and payment processing fees to worry about.   😥

(note to self - include a flyer with orders to divert currently "my few" customers to my own site)
