How many sellers are closing their shops or running down their account in 2024?

We have been a seller on here over a couple of our accounts for many years now.   Over this time we have seen a reduction in sales from a max of £13k pcm to £60 pcm.    We have been through mass seller culls, more and more control over the seller/buyer relationship, the forcing of managed payments, increases in fees and requirements to use promoted/advanced promoted and now bid for clicks, to the point where ebay is taking an unsustainable percentage of profit.

This in turn has lead to such search manipulation as to be virtually impossible for any of our listings to be shown unless we implemented all of the additional promotions, and even then since everyone is in the same boat, it makes little difference.   Search has been broken as a result of all this, and whereas in the past, if your product met the search terms, you could get your item to show, this is now not much short of a miracle!

Maybe you could argue some of it is the economy, but when your listings barely get any visibility unless you pay through the nose for it, it becomes a weak argument at best.

We have closed our shop and have halved our listings, and will be running down all of the stock we do have via other marketplaces.

I'm just curious what other peoples plans are in 2024, are you bearing with ebay in the hopes of better times, or moving on?

This may well be a community, but you are insisting on commenting on the business board.  You are supposedly a private seller, so join the relevant community.

There are many on here that will help and support other sellers.  But when some are clearly flouting the law, why should they expect any better?

Aside from which, the comment you were commenting on, had absolutely nothing to do with you anyway, as the poster I was replying to, clearly misunderstood what had been written.  So pray tell, why is it wrong to correct someone?

The post was made on a public platform, that means that you can and are allowed to comment if you wish to.As long as your comments are with in the platform rules, which they were.As I’ve said before this situation is entirely made by participation it’s down to individuals. If certain people dont like the rules layed out by the platform that’s not down to individuals.Surely as the so called business community you are fully aware of this.

Hi exponential,

Very sad to here you are going, yes this place is testing even the strongest sellers, I have just had a buyer purchase a brass cooker socket all specifics are shown on listings he wants to return the item as not as described even though the information is all clear and direct from the manufacturer, I have done a quick check on the buyer and he is a landlord and has scammed me before with the same item.

I also had a negative feedback when a buyer did not receive his item I replied to him within an hour and refunded him and he smashed me with a NEGATIVE FEEDBACK even though this was the royal mails fault losing his item which was under £5. I try to remove and get told it is the buyers preference and then they then have the *bleep* to advertise that "Seller help is changing" "We will help all sellers" WHEN" What Year?. and "How" I cannot even get to contact you, you just send me around in circles with your contact games!.

But eBay have taken his side and are stating I have to refund, this is totally ludicrous as I have been a seller for over 20 years and they clearly "DO NOT VALUE THIS" I will try to contact them as soon as possible but cannot see I will get a resolution.!.

Don't give up hope, there is always other avenues to pursue.

Les @ wavesales

Left in December and only occasionally bother to read the forums. Still seeing the same unregistered businesses complaining that ebay is ruining it for them. Do feel sorry for those genuine private sellers who have been shafted by ebay, just like businesses have.

I think I've seen you on your new platform.

Perhaps something to consider?

In un-crowded categories (like eggcups) is it better to use auction listings to get to the top of P.1 or RUS and  perhaps be picked up by google shopping?

lol, seriously strange hobby.  Collecting cases of rolling papers, along with various other BRAND new items, such Eye drops,  skin cream and various of those items in multiples.  Exactly the sort of thing people collect.

Strange how absolutely nothing you have sold is second hand......

'Are you paying taxes on your sales'

Are you asking me as a registered business seller if I am paying taxes?

What do you think?

I pay Ebay fees and tax on any profits. I thought that would be common sense to anyone who understands how businesses work.

Your statement has been answered superbly by @therenewalworkshopltd  so no more to add. When you make comments like that on the business boards, just remember that the majority of sellers here know how to spot

( BS)  another business seller a mile off.

I see when you go into the sales section of performance in the ebay hub ebay have removed the percentage they are taking from sales in the selling costs section.

Not a good look imho, makes it look like they realise they are offering very poor value for business sellers. Sadly for them we aren't total idiots and can work out the percentages ourselves.

The UK platform is crumbling.
