How do I collect US tax/duties without enrolling in the GSP?

Hi, can someone please explain to me how I can continue selling to the US? I've had a couple of orders, and no tax was collected upfront, so I've had to cancel the orders. Do I have to enrol in the Global Shipping Programme so that all taxes are collected at checkout? I'm not keen to do that as I've heard that once you're in the GSP, it will be used for all international orders and the postage costs are significantly higher for the customer. Also, my understanding is that you cannot turn off GSP once you have enrolled, is that correct? Any advice would be most appreciated! Thanks.

The code I put in is 7104991000 and is on the customs form.

That question was for @ett1954 - the items they sent (magazines) should definitely have been exempt. If the commodity/tariff code was incorrect or absent it might explain why RM charged a tariff.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Hi @ett1954 ,

Thank you for your post.

This looks to be an issue on the Royal Mail system. Can you provide all the details of an example that we can feedback to our shipping team. I would also advise to reach out to Royal Mail to have it checked.

Thank you,

Kat

Re: How do I collect US tax/duties without enrolling in the GSP?

@4_bathrooms   As I enter the tariff code due to the fact they can vary due to the type of publication, the last magazine would have had the code 4901990000 entered against it.

I intend to enter a non-specific code to my next sale; simply 4901000000 as I noticed this code is specifically covered on the US government tariff website.

Re: How do I collect US tax/duties without enrolling in the GSP?

kat@ebay ; thanks for getting back to me on this.  The most recent (posted October 1st) was order number:

16-13623-78019

The label was purchased through my integrated Royal Mail Click & Drop account and the tariff was added by Royal Mail to the postage cost.  The tariff code entered on the CN22 was:  4901990000  a code for weekly magazine publications and defined as informational material which are supposed to be tariff exempt.

Re: How do I collect US tax/duties without enrolling in the GSP?

kat@ebay   Please see correctly edited post above I inadvertently added an incorrect tariff code to my reply.  Sorry for any confusion.

I would certainly be interested and appreciate any response you can get from Royal Mail.

Re: How do I collect US tax/duties without enrolling in the GSP?

kat@ebay   This was a low value item sent by Standard Royal Mail International postage so no tracking number.

Where would I find a reference number?  The order details only show the order number provided above and Item ID: 394625295656 plus my sales record number: 51004.

Re: How do I collect US tax/duties without enrolling in the GSP?

Hi @ett1954 ,

That's no problem. If there was a reference number on the Royal Mail side we would include in but I'll share the details you have provided previously. We don't have any guarantee that RM will come back on individual cases but will share this feedback and If I get any update on it I will let you know.

Thank you,

Kat
