Change address

Hi all,

I moved house 6 days ago and as part of the process, have updated my address on EBay. They have immediately restricted payouts until I upload proof of my new address using driving license, passport etc. I can’t do that yet as my driving license and passport are not yet updated. I have tried to update the license but I think the background checks may be done over council tax, and the council haven’t yet updated these records.

Does anyone have any suggestions, been in this situation before? Wish I hadnt tried to update my address yet to be honest and sorely tempted to put it back to my old address until the proof I need is in place.

thanks

I think you should do as you suggest. Your licence and bank cards and so on are all still valid. It's not as if buyers are sending cheques to your physical address. You might hit a snag with buying on eBay as you would need to enter a new delivery address.

Change address

I hit this problem when I moved after the second lockdown. As soon as I changed my address ebay put a financial hold on my account and asked for ID documents. I'd had to apply for a photo driving licence as I still had a paper one and had already sent everything to DVLA with my birth certificate as part of the package to prove ID. At the time DVLA was quoting up to 12 weeks to get the new licence because of the backlog and working from home. Also my passport had expired. In the end I contacted Dublin at around 9am on a weekday morning and actually managed to get someone who sorted it out for me. As my passport had expired within 10 years they accepted that and a council tax bill with my new address. I was advised that I may asked to confirm my ID again once I'd received the new licence, but so far that hasn't happened.

UK passports don't show your home address. A passport is designed to prove your identity and nationality, not where you live, and also, omitting the address reduces security and privacy risks if the document is lost or stolen.

Maybe check again with eBay which documents they require? Do they require your passport just as general ID?

Shame you can't change the past, as dealing with eBay before the DVLA might've been the thing to do, but maybe consider it if or when you move again? So you'd keep your photocard to use as ID for a while. The DVLA allows you to continue to drive while it processes a new photocard for change-of-address. Your entitlement exists on DVLA’s electronic record, and the photocard is just evidence of that entitlement. Yes DVLA says you must inform it (or be fined but fines aren't automatically issued) but there's a grace period as it says "as soon as possible". I once forgot to notify them for over 3 months after moving; DVLA didn't care, I wasn't fined, they said I wasn't unusual.
