If only !
I have items that have been in multiple peoples baskets for weeks without any sales whatsoever from the listing.
I would be happy if 20% of what is supposedly in peoples basket right now translated into sales.
Does anyone have a better experience than me with this? Is it just a ploy from eBay to tempt me to make a price reduction?

It's to put time pressure on buyers to make them think the item is about to go out of stock
So if they want the item they will buy now instead of putting it in their basket and thinking about it
I doubt very much if it is in peoples baskets, but you cannot prove this, so they can claim what they like!
Its like the statements on social media sites - X number of your friends follow this page (when you check with friends directly, they don't actually follow that page at all!)

There is a thread (which I can't find at the moment) in which a buyer posted a screenshot of something that came up before making payment. Basically before checking out ebay presented a page which invited the buyer to check out other similar items. I've wondered if these messages about people having items in their baskets are actually abandoned purchases because buyers have been shown something else by ebay right at the death that they decide to go with instead.

I used to run a website where I did exactly this. 'x people have this in their basket', or 'x people bought this in the last 24 hours'. Of course they didn't really! On a personal level, I dont give a flying f** what other people are doing. On a professional level, in honesty it's a cheap FOMO ploy and I don't believe it for a second.

Last year I also had doubts about whether '2 people have this in their basket' was true or not.
However I can confirm it is accurate and true, if you text someone you know and ask them to add your item to their basket, it will say 1 other person has it in their basket, I asked 5 people to do it and then it accurately said 5 people had it in their basket, I later asked one person to remove it and it went down to 4, then when they all removed it from their baskets the basket message didn't appear again.
I wonder if people add it to their baskets because they think that eBay is like Temu and in a day or two they will get an email to say the item is reduced.
