The saddest thing of all is that the person who sold the response from Mr. O'Toole probably does not care as they got what they wanted, so sod everyone else after them.

Very sad indeed.:-(  I would never sell any of my graphs and I only write to the people I admire or am a fan of.  I treasure each and every one.

#6 - With the best intentions in the world it is easy to say you will never sell any of your autographs, but you never know what life holds in store for you.

At some point in their lives, many collectors fall on hard times or have urgent family needs. Family always comes first, the autographs second.

What Daz highlighted though was someone pretending to be a fan to get an autograph with one goal in mind - selling it. There is a very clear difference between someone like that, and a collector who has to reluctantly sell some or all of their autographs to make ends meet.

Unfortunately this is something which affects all of us. Whilst we are quite often lucky to get a reply,a number of others do not respond because of perceptions they will end up being sold on Ebay or elsewhere.

I also agree with Nigel, whilst I have sold some spare cards over the years,it is not my intention to sell my collection, but if I needed money for health or family reasons,I would have to consider selling some.

How do you know this, sorry but I didn't see anything of the sort in the letter.  For all anyone knows the person who got it fell on "hard times".

If I have read anything wrong and am talking tripe then feel free to educate me.

Move along, these aren't the products you're looking for....

#12 - To be fair, that could be the case, but I figure less likely. Mr O'Toole must have had hundreds of signed items sold on popular online selling venues prior to this, but what made this stand out? Seeing something he had just signed appear for sale would be the most likely reason to identify this or be annoyed, and is the most common reason for such reactions from celebs.

You are right though, and it could have been something else - hard times and back luck for being spotted or public display of personal contact info, etc.

I had intended to write to Peter O'Toole but had read that he no longer signs. It must very annoying to see something that you think is for a genuine fan appear on ebay etc. These people don't have to sign and it must take up a fair amount of time, so it's no wonder they refuse to sign when they've seen someone make some easy money from their graph.

It could be that this person needed the money but it seems someone near to Peter looks out for such behaviour and if the graph appeared for sale soon after he'd signed it, I can see why he'd feel burned.

I agree with most of the above comments, and can fully understand P. OToole's reaction, however it's not just you guys who are TTM collectors who suffer as a result of these collectors selling on autographs. Many stars now refuse IP collectors too for exactly the same reasons. Many stars are notoriously difficult to obtain, hence the inflated high prices their autographs sell for, and hence the market gets flooded with cheap fakes.

I must admit i have sold some of the autographs i have recieved ttm but they have been sold to help me fund photos, postage etc for the stuff iv been sending out for the cricket team. Which unfortunatley at the end of the season i will no longer be able to coach due to work 😞

Theres absolutely no shame in that mate. TTM, IP, Dealer bought, shop bought etc etc It's yours to do what ever you want to do with it.

At least it was genuine 😉
