Jane - I never use my mobile for inetrnet/email abroad, it is too expensive. It's a big enough rip off on call/text charges. If you have a laptop, most hotels have deals with Orange or something like that for wifi access. A typical charge might be 4 Euros for 24 hours or 10 Euros for 3 days or something like that in Europe.
