Charity shop finds w/e 25Nov12

After thinking I would not get to a charity shop this week, I did quite well and found another five signed books. Some nice ones.

Earlier in the week I mentioned finding a brand new HB 1/1 from this year for £1. New books and new signed books are more common than you would think in charity shops. Two main reasons -

1. Local books hops like Waterstones branches donate books.

2. Unwanted gifts often get donated.

Very pleased with this addition to my rugby collection -

Then yesterday I found four more signed books on a short trip out with my daughter.

First, in one shop found the following for £3. At this point I have not been able to authenticate it. The book is like new in condition, but with the dated signature and Arabic inscription, it is not easy to read. I will keep you posted on this one. It looked interesting and worth a shot for £3, but have not found an example of the Sultan's signature yet for comparison.

Sultan bin Mohamed Al-Qasimi is a member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and current ruler of the Sharjah emirate. He has ruled Sharjah since 1972. He is a prolific author of books, so it would be no surprise if this was his signature and handwriting.

Then in my favourite shop, found three great books in their 3 for £1 deal. The Le Tissier is one I was missing from my footy collection, so well chuffed with that, and I have seen Fern's book unsigned so many times, it is nice to finally find a signed copy. I had never heard of the third author, but it seems a nice book, and is nicely signed.

The humour chip inside my head says wouldn't it be funny of the page in the Sultan's book was just a shopping list. 🙂

Great finds Nigel - some super ones for your collection.  Particularly like the Le Tiss one - he scored some spectacular goals didn't he?  Hope you got my reply re your article on signed books for Autograph News UK - thanks again.

I can confirm Sultan's signature is indeed authentic after seeing this -

Really pleased you managed to confirm the Sultan's sig. I liked the idea of it being a shopping list. 😄

It still amazes me at the amount you find, Nigel. I keep looking but it's very rare to find much of anything. Well done on all your new finds.

Suzanne - I have just put together a small article about signed books for Pete's Autograph News UK publication. One of the topics I bring up is that I believe finding signed books in charity shops will be heavily influenced by signings in the local area. Anywhere in or around London will have a chance to do well due to the sheer volume of signings in London. Likewise, other big cities and surrounding areas should do pretty good also. Alex also has an excellent run of successes where he is.

That makes sense, Nigel. Signings moved away from me when Bluewater opened at Dartford. I should imagine there are some good finds to be had in that area but, it's not a place I go to. Too scary!;\
