This is not a *slimming club* really.

I think it would be nice to have a place to come & chat about weight loss ideas (safe sensible ones only please!),
to share personal experiences and achievements, and also to ask for help.

Lindi is our resident expert, and has kindly offered her help.
Just introduce yourself and come on in, you are most welcome!

Thanks for all the advice & info!

#72 - How do I make a meringue without eggs?? lol

I've read up on the bad effects of sugar & it's made no difference, I'll manage to cut right down for a few days but when I get a complete 'zombie' state, only an instant sugar hit will cure.

I don't (think) I eat many/any simple carbs (aside from the sugar). The bread I eat is Rice based & the Ricecakes are wholegrain brown rice based & cereal is either corn or wholegrain brown ricr based. I thought they were all sources of complex carbs..am I wrong??

The only 'diet' product I eat is Heinz WW Salad Cream. I don't eat any processed foods & mainly stick to tuna, sardines, veg & salad.

Well, I'm afraid I've swung the other way. I used to need may carbohydrate fixes reguarly during the day. Eventually I gave up and after a couple of days of being free of refined carbohydrates, I felt wonderful, but the first two days were not pleasant.

The only carbs that I would suggest are whole wheat grains and whole barley grains sprinkled on pasta. At a pinch, brown rice would do, and that would be about it.

Rice cakes - yuk, try eating cardboard, far tastier!

WW salad cream. I guess it doesn't have much fat in it, but does it have sugar?

very quick as off out again

forgot you cant have eggs but you can get a egg subsitute from health shops that you could use with egg whites .

Also i am a bit worried about you in the sense of what you are not eating , everyone at some time especially women like a sugar fix , not good but needed sometimes even if most of the time its in the mind.

But you say you generally feel really ill and really need it , i would advise you to get your self checked at doctors to make sure it is not a health problem that is causing it .

Even though i have been doing this 7 years i always advise anyone to get a check at doctors if things dont seem right . I am not medically qualified so would not like to give you wrong advice .

floppity , yes it does have sugar in in as most of the low fat versions of products do . this is why i always advise looking at labels

low fat doesnt neccasary mean healthy

some times you are better having less of the non low fat than low fat .

Once again, thanks for the advice.

81# Wheat & Barley are out. Corn & Rice is Ok for me! Your right about rice cakes, they are foul, but without them I would have nothing & it's amazing what you can get used to when you have no choice! Same goes with the salad cream, I found I was reacting to the normal one, which is why I switched to the WW.

82# Thanks for the concern 🐵 I have seen my doc, & he's not concerned, it was him that told me to up my complex carbs as much as I could.

83# Ham buttie... Mmmmmm no fair!! 🙂

Hi All,
From what I can gather, the only way to lose weight, no matter what diet you are on, is that you must burn off more calories than you eat.
I know it sounds obvious, but really people could save a foretune in money paying out for classes and high priced stuff from health shops etc.

If one eats a lot, one must excercise a lot. If one eats a little, then only need to excercise a little.

As far as I can find out, that's the only way possible to lose weight. Use up more calories than eaten.

Open to any suggestions on this. (and please excuse any spelling errors).

#86, of course your theory is right, but if only it were that simple!

The facts are we cannot all exercise as much as we'd like due to health problems and/or personal circumstances.

And also most people who overeat are not eating for hunger, they are eating for emotional reasons.
Slimming clubs can be a port in a storm for these people, where they get a structure for their eating, and a support network at the same time. And these clubs can't do it for free (unfortunately) because they have wages to pay etc.
Of course a free alternative would be to go and see your GP who would assign you a dietitian, but this isn't for everyone because theres not the same emotional support thats available at a club.

Its a sad reality that due to lifestyles, processed food, and ill health, we are, as a nation getting fatter.

Your equation is stating the obvious, and since most people know the theory but still struggle with their weight, then there must be more to it than that.

Thanks for your views though 🙂

The theory that weight loss will be acheived if fewer calories are consumed than are expended is fine in principle, but doesn't work in practice.

The body can switch to 'starvation mode' and survive on as little as 800 calories a day if necessary.

Also, calories on packets are misleading. It assumes that all food consumed is converted with 100% efficiency. Well some foods are not digested at all and some are digested very efficiently.

Glucose and Sucrose are among the foods digested very easily and thus laid down to fat most easily if they are not needed. More difficult to digest are protein and fat which use a lot of energy to be broken down before they can be laid down as fat.

The idea that fat that is eaten has a special pathway to your hips is bunkum.

Some foods can of course pass through the body while hardly being digested (you know which ones these are!)

Hi Sloworm,
Really weightloss is a funny topic because everyone is not the same.

This thread isnt to promote any one particular eating plan, just to get hints, ideas, tips and encouragement.

If you post your concerns someone may be able to help you 🙂

So how does one lose weight?

Eat sensibly and naturally. Don't eat refined products. Eat lots of vegetables (except high energy low glycemic index potatoes). Eat meat in its natural form (ie not in a pie).

Eat fruit in season only (if God had wanted us to eat bananas in March in England..........)

Drink lots of water.

Take exercise, and lots of it.

89#
I agree with most of what you have said but i differ on The statement "If god had wanted us to eat bananas in march in england .....)"
For goodness sake we would be eating nothing if we didnt eat imported stuff. As long as its fresh it doesnt matter . Or even frozen in the case of blueberrys , gooseberrys etc.

92# Cant argue much with that lol if everyone ate slowly and less fat and no snacking that means alchol as well and didnt have chocie just fruit yes they would lose weight . sensibly 🐵

No One item will make you fat , its eating too much of everything that does .

And there was a article the other day about a guy who just ate maccies for a whole month , and he put on over a stone and had all sorts of things wrong with him at the end . Even though he had stayed within the recommended calories he should have

Lindiloo

Well, I only chose bananas because they are the most calorific fruit, I believe. And also the most popular (probably for the same reason).

By the way, what did you make of the New Labour thinktank idea about taxing fatty foods. As an Atkins advocate, you can imagine it made my blood boil.

However some of the thinking was a bit odd, like taxing full fat milk. As its only 3.5% fat, it makes you wonder if they would slap a tax on avacados!

I'm not really in need of losing weight that much but I do have a belly on me, I think it's alcohol that does it. I'm going to start salsa next week for fitness.

I found out last year that I have IBS and can't eat dairy and have a real problem with wheat, it's such a pain but since cutting out dairy I have lost weight. If you don't eat dairy for any reason don't forget to get calcium tablets, you're def going to need them.

What a brilliant thread, nothing like a bit of support and understanding to give you some motivation. I have so much weight to lose, over 100 pounds. I lost 8 stone a few years ago and then my partner moved in and it was all downhill from then, you seem to fall into some kind of comfort zone. I posted a thread on here a little while ago about my partner giving me ten pound for every ponnd I lost and so far have lost 7 pounds (am him 70!!). I am following the weightwatchers diet which I find brilliant, but the key for me seems to be excersise, if I do it weight comes off. Earlier on in this thread someone gave a list of what they had eaten one evening and I thought to myself that is exactly me only every day. Sometimes I think I have an illness as I just eat and eat, hungry or not its irrelevant, even to the point of being physically sick. I have a lot of stress in my life, my mother died of cancer which I cant seem to get my head round and my father now has lung cancer. we have 3 kids, are doing up a property and work is really busy. BUT I am not blaming these things, I am fat cos I eat too much. Sorry to go on and on but its good to get these things out with people who know what you are talking about. I constantly think about food but have to be determind this time to change my whole lifestyle. Any tips or advice would be fantastic.

The other day I had my blood sugar measured and it was TOO LOW. My doctor advised me to eat bananas because my potassium level was too low too.

Duh!

#96 WELCOME,
I really appreciated your thread, it was SO honest, thanks! I think honesty can sometimes propel us into making changes, so lets all resolve to be honest here, even if its embarrasing!!

Hi again Eileen, Sorry you're feeling confused, but this thread isn't really about one particular eating plan.
Its really more about encouragement to keep trying to live a healthy lifestyle. But you are more than welcome to ask specific questions about whatever plan you are following at the moment, and if anyone can help, they will.

Take care!
