This is not a *slimming club* really.

I think it would be nice to have a place to come & chat about weight loss ideas (safe sensible ones only please!),
to share personal experiences and achievements, and also to ask for help.

Lindi is our resident expert, and has kindly offered her help.
Just introduce yourself and come on in, you are most welcome!

I'm a bad person.

I moved into my new house on Monday, and since the celebratory dinner on Monday evening all I've eaten is a plate of chips and beans.

I'm going to lunch with my partner at one, but can someone please give me encouragement to eat again today?

Thanks.

If you want to try the Atkins diet, the first step is to buy the book in order to do it properly. There are an awful lot of misconceptions about the diet (namely that you eat a lot of meat).

Take a while to read the book, but be warned, it is very badly written.

The health warnings are (and lindiloo will disagree with this) based on a doctrinal view of what a 'balanced diet' is. An example from the book is the person who works in a New York deli and eats corned beef sandwhiches for lunch all his working life and then suffers health problems. The dieticians will automatically blame the corned beef and never consider that the bread could be the problem (I am not advocating a high consumption of saturated fat though).

Without the effects that refined carbohydrates have on the body, such things as saturated fat are benign, its when you mix them with large quantities of refined carbohydrates that you can have problems.

Now, another misconception is over cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in your body is actually manufactured by the body. Eating high cholesterol foods don't actually make much difference to your own cholesterol leves (and conversely, cutting them out doesn't bring your cholestol levels down very much. However people who follow a low carbohydrate diet experience dramatic drops in the bad cholesterol and increases in the good cholesterol. This seems to upset the dieticians 😉

I find the food very appetising. Last night we had a stir fry with some belly pork and one of those large packs of stir fry vegetables you get in the supermarket. I refuse to buy one of those ready made chinese sauces because they are loaded with sugar and instead made my own sauce with soy sauce and dry sherry.

Because I don't have rice with such a meal, the amount of vegetables I consume increases to make up the shortfall in bulk, and in general we find we now eat twice as many vegetables as we used to do.

Wow flopity, you know your stuff 🙂

I bought the south beach diet book, and was really impressed. It is very similar to the atkins diet but with less fat. Also veggies are allowed in the 1st 2 weeks.

Personally i think that done properly, these diets can work well. The problem comes when people dont drink the required amount of water or take the vitamin supplements recommended in those 2 weeks. My hubby did it a couple of years ago, and he stuck to it for 6 months (which is a record for him!) he lost 2 1/2 stone and hasnt put an ounce of it back on.
His health didn't suffer, because he was drinking litres of water and taking his vits. In fact he felt great, really full of energy.

I always follow these rules, 🐵 , Avoid too much of the saturated fats, (but some is good for insulation!;) many people go wrong with the saturated fats, so be careful, also keep within the cal intake 2500 for men, 2000 for woman (i think)............ , Water and plenty of it! he he i know i know water has no taste , but i find that evian has a nice taste to it, but if you want some taste add a slice of lemon to the water, it's good for you! 🙂 , eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, (even some soups and other things can provide at least 2 portions of your fruit and veg intake), ermm try to always serve a bit of salad with your meals, and stick to the 3 meals a day and try to avoid eating after 6 pm............ geeze i wrote a long list, lol , but i find eating heathier so nice, and it makes you feel better inside aswell as out, got alot more energy now during the day than i use to 😉

Hi guys - what a great thread!!

I have been on my healthy eating regime for two weeks now, and feel like I am doing well. But I would like some thoughts about if my average daily diet is ok.

Breakfast
Bowl of bran flakes or shredded wheat with ss milk

Lunch
Bowl of soup with toasted bagel

Tea
Fresh salad with a grilled piece of meat - usually a lamb or pork chop.

I'm not snacking at all, and usually drink water and a couple of cups of tea at work, then a can of diet coke at home in the evening (I'm a pop addict!)

I also do 80 sit ups in the morning, 80 when I get in from work, and 80 before I go to bed.

Will all this be suficiant to lose weight? I'm aiming for 3 stone.

Thanks

I've just popped over from the "stopped smoking" group - you all do give good advice!
I found the talk about sweeteners an eye opener, - will def. cut them out from now on.
Wish I could feel addicted to carrots or watercress, but it's carbs or ciggies!

gamgee, thats really good, try to add some salad to the food, it helps towards your daily 5 fruit and veg allowance 🙂 keep it up ! your doing well!

Hi flopity!

aftrer 6.00 most people tend to wind down (not exercise) and you store more fat that way, plus your only meant to have 3 good meals a day , it's snaking that causes the problems , which makes people put on weight 🙂

255# That is a total myth not to eat after 6pm

As long as you have what you are supposed to have within your working day then you will lose weight

Love the pic lindi :0)

I've just done my weekly weigh-in and thankfully it was nothing to cry about, lol. I've lost another 1lb - making 9lb lost over 6 weeks. The weight loss isn't as fast as I'd like admittedly, but I'm still very happy with the way it's going. I feel great, and the fact I can now fit perfectly into a pair of jeans that I couldn't have even fastened up 6 weeks ago is a great incentive to carry on!
