Many UK members find themselves on the .com boards. Maybe a similar reason to yours.
Lots of bad links on the UK site that leads to .com and when there the user selects help, that gives several choices with forum amongst them. Select forum and the reply to their first post for help is often - you're on the .com forum you want the UK one.
So maybe the reverse is true with some bad links on the .com site.
