Verify My Age just texted me on a number even Ebay doesnt have!

Just bought a Vape and was sent an email saying that I needed to go on to Verify My Age via a phone. I went on to the site from my phone, but when its stated the T&C I decided to close the page and email the seller my ID directly. About an hour later Verify My Age sent me a text telling me to verify my age.

The massively creep thing is that they texted  me on my new number, That number is about 2 months old and niether Ebay or Paypal has it. How the hell did they get access to this number?!

I will be logging a complaint with Ebay about the seller. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm sorry to say that whenever you communicate any information particularly of this nature ... You are going to leave a digital footprint or 'signature' that's traceable to say you have left your information there. You were aiming to communicate that your age was sufficient enough to buy a product from a Seller. That needs to come back to you somehow [self explanatory really] as proof to the Seller that it was you leaving the information required and not somebody acting on your behalf.

In many countries it is illegal to make an underage transaction or carry out an underage sale and the ramifications for doing so and being caught are severe. People lose licenses and in extreme cases livelihoods for this. Same as in some countries the penalties are also there for attempting to buy age-restricted products when underage: These are mainly to act as a deterrent which in your case clearly wasn't needed - you had nothing to hide so these don't apply.

But in this 'C Y A' day and age retailers have to be ultra-sure of what they are doing and who they are selling to being legit. The problem of underage sales being successful here in the UK appears once again to be on the rise [Source: Grocer Magazine] having fallen over the 2013 to 2017 period. All I would urge you is not to get too spooked out about how the retailer who you were establishing a business transaction with anyway has ended up obtaining the phone number you used to pass them transaction-critical information. Unless of course they now use this to bombard you with useless offers every five seconds ... Simply telling them to 'Foxtrot Oscar' can solve this or if not make an official complaint to Trading Standards or the equivalent - so they tell the retailer to 'Foxtrot Oscar' on your behalf ... Now this does scare retailers into thinking twice! But in 99.9% of cases people in your situation find there's no bogey-men on their doorstep as sent by the retailer after they have discovered the retailer knows their phone number and address because they will have to send your product to you as well don't forget dart

Boom.

They got your number.

What is there to complain about? You give information away then want to complain about a seller who is only doing what the law requires.

you gave him the number when you contacted him directly,

how on earth do you think ebay could give him a number they don't have?
