Affordable flats in London, and about time most would say,but..............

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/oct/02/boris-johnson-approve-affordable-london-flats-rent

'Boris Johnson is set to approve plans for “affordable” flats that the Guardian understands could cost tenants up to £2,800 a month to rent'

"Sarah Hayward, the leader of the London borough of Camden, said the expected rents on the Mount Pleasant scheme were among the highest ever seen for affordable housing.

“If these rent levels are as claimed, they will not be in any way affordable,” the Labour councillor said. “Boris Johnson is showing his true colours. He doesn’t want poor people living in London.”

Thats what it's all about really,Some of the comments after the article say it all Smiley Surprised

i would think affordable housing should be nearer £400/£500 a month perhaps only 1 or 2 are the higher price?

sorry just read the article it would seem the cheapest is over £1000 if you earned enough to pay that surely you would buy?

Sadly I think London is a whole other world to most of the rest of the country, wages where we are, are a lot lower and for a single person they wouldn't be able to afford that.  The average takehome for a fulltime non skilled worker is about £1000 a month. A small bedsit costs about £350 per month plus bills, the average 2 bedroom house would be between £595 and £695 per month depending where it is,  to rent.

We are always amazed when we see programmes where a studio flat in London is £1200 plus per month.

We were watching a programme about houses in Liverpool and some where as little as £27000. It still amazes me the difference in different areas.

"Affordable flats in London"

I lived in London and worked out of a London base for 25 Years, I lived in rented Bedsits or Flats; things I could walk away from easily, I never bought a House there and never wanted to.  It's a shame that People who are synonomous with London ( of old ) and gave it the deep rooted reputation that made it what it is........Pearly Kings & Queens, Eastenders, dockers, rivermen, etc. etc. ALL now couldn't afford a House there...............if they wanted to.  But then, it's such a wonderful Cosmopolitan City now.........isn't it........for tourists; who save up for years to stay there for a week or two...........on Holiday.

"Affordable flats in London"

I was born in a borough of south east London, my dad and my son were both born there. I bought a flat there which I now rent out for 960pm. It is probably one of the smallest flatsnyou have ever seen. Open plan kitchen, tiny bedrooms etc but that is the going rate. It is also now worth 230k minimum. Absolutely crazy tbh. When I travel around the country and see 4 bed detached houses for roughly the same price I realise just how crazy it is.

As for London, I almost hate the place now and feel like a stranger here. Hence I now live in the suburbs.

Some people can obviously afford the housing in Greater London!

The population of Greater London grew by 108,000 last year and it is estimated that it will grow by a further 1,700,000 in the next 15 years.
