an interesting thing happened to me in ebay CANADA last month.
http://imageupload.co.uk/viewer.php?file=c3x6dagjex2dgv7n31tk.jpg
surely you jests! i rekon people only say "JS" because they prefer that over saying the F or S word?
from wikipedia:
"Saying “God!” or “JS!” as an expression of surprise or annoyance is considered by many people to be blasphemy, mostly because one of the Ten Commandments says not to use God's name "in vain" (without substance or without intended relevance).
i find it quite a laugh that anyone would consider blasphemy as profanity, for the matter is blasphemy is even considered as a policy violation on ebay?
besides i only said that word out of SHEER frustration of having to repeat my questions 5 times and over, only to have those blokes there insult me and asks the same questions over and over and stating the obvious instead of trying to assist me in resolving an issue. if you ask me the real cancer there is not profanity but the idiotcy there.
as soon as all my orders arrived i'm going back to my old UK account, i dearly and sorely missed the great customer service there and the warm community.
my biggest mistake was typing" ebay" in google and then clicking on the first link and registering a new account without checking to see if i'm actually in ebay uk or not. all this happened because google pointed me to ebay canada, and what a lovely community they have there!
"but that's canada for you, EH?"

i found a more blibical explanation for this.
JS: An exclamation of anger. According to Christianity, you aren't supposed to say the Lord's name is vain, so it's considered by some to be a swear word.
quite interesting, so JS considered by christians to be "religious profanity", but is not actual "Legal Profanity"
( eg: if i say the words "JS" on the radio i'm not breaking any federal law, whereas if i said the "F" word, i would be subject to persecution)
all this seem rather subjective, whether it's profanity or not seems to be in the eye of the beholder, now if i were a christian i would surely consider "JS" to be actual profanity, but if i were a buddist i would not think of it as such, but for legal profanity such as the "F" word or the "S" word, it is for certain that everyone in the room, chrisitans and buddists alike would take offense in.
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/everyone-profanity.html
Now ebay's ambiguious profanity policy doesn't say whether they consider religious profanity as actual legal profanity or not, so i find it unfathomable and unfair because, again "religious profanity" and "Profanity" is not the same thing and federal law does not legally considered "JS" to be "profanity".
now if there were ebay policies prohibiting the use of "Religious profanity" then i most certainly would be wrong by saying "JS", but there is no mention of "religious profanity" in the policy, and again.... "religious profanity" is not actual profanity and should not be considered as such. legally the "F" word and "JS" are 2 different things. just like how you can't called a whale a fish.
to summerize:
Religious Profanity is not legally considered "Profanity"
Legal profanities (F-word) - unlawful
Religious profanities (JS) - lawful
of course i could be missing something here, anyone care to enlighten me more on this issue? much appriciated and cheers mates!

"all this seem rather subjective, whether it's profanity or not seems to be in the eye of the beholder, now if i were a christian i would surely consider "JS" to be actual profanity . . . . "
I think you have hit the nail on the head with the above - if the moderator reviewing your post was a Christian then you have admitted yourself that they would consider what you posted to be profane.

yes i know that,
but if he/she is not a christian
is it still profane or not?

alrighty then let's think of it like this:
-Cadrice is a christian, she considers the use of "JS" to be actual Profanity just like the "F-word"
-Billy is a christian, he does not consider "JS" to be actual Profanity just like the "F-word"
so should "JS" be considered profanity?
-Paster John proclaims that "JS" is Profanity on public television
-however not all pasters around the world agree
so should everyone in the commonwealth and around the world duly accepts that "JS" be classified as profanity?
anoter example:
Mary thinks chocolate tastes sour
John thinks chocolate tastes sweet
because mary thinks that chocolates tastes sour
therefore everyone should thinks that chocolates is sour?

Depends on whether Cadrice or Billy reviews the reported post - simples!

well yes...but i rekon that Cadrice is not being very fair, because she based it on her personal preference and opinion, instead of on actual facts.
i've never used the f-word on anyone at work, because i know they might sue me. but i used the word JS all the time, because it's not legally profanity.
it's just not appropriate to call "JS" profanity, because it legally isn't profanity.

yes, quite.
oh you sly angel you
" the often used “Oh my God!” is obvious taking God‘s name in vain, even if people don’t‘ think so. Even further, the use of “Oh my gosh!” is a euphemism for “Oh my God!” and there is no difference at all. That is the way that God looks at it and it is breaking the Third Commandment. God hears it as a substitution for His name and we are told not to take God’s name in vain at any time and for any reason. Taking His name in vain means using it in a careless, useless, or meaningless way. Sometimes people will even attach the word “**bleep**” after it and this God hates. This is clearly sin. Jesus said in Matthew 12:36 “that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.”
How about the euphemism “Gosh”? This too is a euphemism for “God”. It is no different than taking God’s name and using it in a useless or vain way. God will not hold those guiltless who profane His name. Exodus 20:7 is clear on this: “”You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” Leviticus 19:12 says, “”‘Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.” Deuteronomy 5:11 records “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” Jesus is Lord and God and so when you use His name in vain or a euphemism for it, it is sin as well.

The majority of the commonly used terms of surprise could be deemed as euphemisms for profanity

Yes, I say "Gosh" quite a lot these days, usually a replacement for "Oh **bleep**" ....
08-10-2013 11:24 AM
Taking the strict meaning of the 'profanity', all these expressions must be the most profane of any curse words. In the days that they come from, I'm sure they were considered such. Words for parts of the anatomy, and various bodily functions, and acts were quite in common usage, from what I gather, but to take the Lord's name in vain, for instance, threatened your very soul! You'd be too worried oldwould come and getcha.

oh yes, quite a few of these actually
Jack: "gosh what a lovely dress i bought for you on ebay, Rose! why don't you try it on now?"
Rose: "oh my gawd Jack the dress is coming apart by itself! hurry! let us make haste to my bed"
teenage girl: "i lost the bid on that "twlight" dvd set! oh gawd! do it! do it now!"
middle aged man: "blody hel! i ordered a twlight dvd set! oh gawd! take me! take me now!"
John: "the seller just sent me a box of bricks instead of that TV i ordered, gawd help us all this weekend because i'm going to miss my footballgame and go crazy throwing those bricks at the lot of you!"
Mr. Wang: "well what in gawd's name were you thinking ordering from a seller with 500 negetive feedbacks?"
Cadrice: "for chrst's sake stop buying EVERYTHING on ebay, we're going to the mall for a change."
Billy: "Jeez honey now i've got to fight with all the seniors and hippies for the parking space, i hope you're happy now"
Cadrice: "who was that woman on the phone?you better explain yourself or so help me gawd!!"
Billy: "fine! with gawd as my witness i swear that she's only my young, hot and beautiful secretary, whom i see every day and night but could never possibily have had any physical relationship with whatsoever."
Billy: "jumping JS! my gastly wife just agreed to the devorce!"
Mr. Wang: "may gawd have mercy on your soul!"
Cadrice: "holy cow! look at all these religious profanity!"
John: "oh thank gawd i'm wearing a blindfold for no apprent reason"
Peter: "Good god! who is that lovely lady tending in the fields?"
Billy "gee peter, that's my horse. god forbid you use your eyeballs properly"
John: "oh my goodness i'm so sorry that ran your cat over, please take my $500 dollars as compensation
Billy: "oh heavens no, that was just my anonying father-in-law's cat."
at this point in life i think it nigh impossible for anyone to still their tounge to one that befits the "teachings" of god, i for one am not going to heaven afterall.
it is impossible to say anything without somehow displeasing the almighty one.

Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu or Agnostic, the religious preferences of the Mod matters not a jot. What matters are the religious views of the person that reported your original post.
