*Shudders* not quite a swampy Salford (counts arms and legs to make sure)
People have different political leanings and nothing stokes the fires of debate like Thatcher, no one remembers the good things she did only the bad things that affected them, she did have a cabinet behind her advising her you know, how long did she stay in power?
the majority seemed to like her policies for a few years.
08-04-2013 3:40 PM
You may or may not have agreed with her policies - I most certainly didn't.
However I do wish we had more politicians like her - by that I mean politicians who had a genuine belief in a set of principles, who would stand by those beliefs and wouldn't be swayed by opinion polls just to hang on to their jobs or grab a few votes.

i personally agree that someone with a backbone needs to take over and she had that...but her government set up the way we have been governed since and thats my biff with her and her like and all politicians,no political agenda here just a fair set up....the govs before her were going corrupt but she invited shareholders in to use tax money for self gain for herself and family and friends tebbit springs to mind then portillo .She did nothing to my knowledge apart from falklands and the army were the heros as always not the whoever sending them.
so yep to creeky ,a strong leader is needed but they have to have a fair agenda for all and rid politics of profiteers once and for all. I am kinda hoping this person does show up but if not, let the monarchy have another go .

The thing is that nobody who voted for Thatcher could claim that they didn't know what they were voting for. She made clear what her policies were and the principles she believed in and didn't waver from those whatever the opposition.
Unlike today's politicians who say one thing to get elected and then forget all their promises when elected.

There are some people in life I would wish an early death upon but Margaret Thatcher is not one of them when I compare her to some of the people that commit the most heinous incomprehensible crimes possible.
Was this woman any worse than all the prime ministers before her and now after?
Haven't they all left this country in debt, reeling and with blood on their hands?
Would I celebrate her death? No.
Am I sorry that she has died? Again I would answer no as she means nothing to me.
Would I revel in the death of mass murderers like Hitler and Harold Shipman - a resounding YES!
I too dislike her for what I now know she did to this country but at the time, I didn't and was one of the 'mugs' who voted for her so I am to blame for allowing myself to fall for the hot air, spin n' fluff..
I was one of those simple minded females impressed by the fact that she had come up through the ranks and was willing to take on a totally male dominated world-wide political environment - I thought it would be a good thing not just for home grown businesses and issues but for overseas development and perhaps a "female" influence backed by the hefty arm that the good old UK used to carry would swing the lead and calm the masses.
Okay I was wrong... and it is people like me who voted for her that are to blame.
If there was a "vote of no confidence" that would allow the electorate to force her to stand down as Prime Minister then I would have ticked that box too.
One of my personal friends used to be one of her personal advisers and he has told me that she was an incredibly troubled women torn between so many things... he was one of the casualties in the Brighton bomb, he was staying in the floor above her.
Liberal/Labour/New Labour/Conservative/Screaming Lord Such - whoever is voted in we are at their total mercy until the next election day and none of the animals reveal their true selves until under the pressure of power and decision making .... Could I have done her job? Absolutely not. Would I have made the same bad decisions and choices? Probably!
She too was someone's child... mother... sister etc ...and I suppose we should view it from that perspective - the loss will be deep and personal. Ours is purely political and if this present Government is all that they say they are then the electorate who voted for them will be accountable for the damage they cause as I was in the 'Thatcher Years'.

The ex prime minister with the marmite touch love her or loathe her, the miners wont forget or forgiver her and the label snatcher thatcher springs to mind after pinching the milk from our kids gubs, the anglo irish agreement signing with gareth fitzceltic, but one thing i do admire about her, was her stance on terrorism.. and at the end of the day love her or loathe her she was someones Rich mum, rich wife, rich sister, rich aunt.

they voted her out on the largest ever scale as well when they realized she was a greedy thief like her husband...so not everything she said was above board ie..people should not smoke whilst promoting her own tobacco industry in india ,for more money of course...if she had been a genuine for good of all (not a me person) she may well have been a great prime minister, but she set the wheels in motion for the likes of blair and brown to use any money as though it was theirs whilst totally disregarding the populous.
She was corrupt and let corruption in...hence turn your back.
I thought she was voted out to let in a more understanding leader but turns out she let the private greed machine in to the door through her own...that from my stand point is unforgivable regardless of how popular she was in her hayday.

Actually "they" didn't - she never lost an election as PM

I didn't agree with many of Mrs Thatcher's policies, but really admire her for a lot of things. She stood up to the Argentinians, she stood up to the European Union, and defended us as a country.
She was not popular with the miners - however, having been a young girl growing up in South Wales (during the miners' strikes, so seeing it from first-hand) I can also state most categorically that Arthur Scargill was a retrobate and a trouble-maker. He was responsible for stirring up bad feeling, encouraging the miners to strike for a long time (and causing a great deal of hardship, including families losing their homes). He, however, continued to receive his Union pay cheque, therefore suffering no particular hardship. He was, IMO, a bad apple.
Mrs Thatcher is the ONLY female Prime Minister we have ever had, and in that era, I really feel a lot of women felt inspired by her, encouraging them (us) to think, in this male-dominated world, "you know what - I can do more with my life - it is within my grasp".
No Prime Minister has been perfect - what human being could possibly be perfect? (we've had worse). But as someone said above (I think it was Mitzi??) she was a Mother who was loved, a family member - and who could be horrible to the family members left behind?
I wouldn't mourn her particularly, but give her due respects.

hi kiss, was it scargill that shut the mines or did he fight for them to be kept open? if he was a con, then he conned 1000's.

scargill was a bad one pete and thats the reason, he conned 1000s

She won't be missed by the coal miners..;-)
Fact: The Labour government presided over the closure of more pits than the Conservsteves

wish I could pretend we had different thinking political parties in this country but as treefrog says everything thatchers government started was continued by the next bunch of self taking despots and now continued by this lot ..she was 100% responsible for letting private shareholders, media, advertising, control freaks etc in.

I thought it was April 1st again:
Downing street said she receive a rare ceremonial funeral, with gun carriage, military procession and a service at St Paul's Cathedral, in the style of the funerals of Diana, Princess of Wales and the Queen Mother.Costs are to be borne by the government and Lady Thatcher's estate,
At St Paul's there will be a military guard of honour, and Chelsea pensioners will line the steps. The service will be televised,

I might watch it just to make sure

RIP Maggie.
To me from when I could start voting she was the best PM I remember.
Sadly an lady M I know never got far up in her party.
I didnt supportthis MPs party but she really was the BEST MP we had.
I cant tell you this mPs name as sadly Ive forgotten her name but she was great when you went to her for help.
She sorted things out for me and a few didabled people by getting dropped pavements place round my town and whemn peaople parked on them and we told her sh very kindly stopped them by getting white lnes placed to stop these people parking.
Id love to know if she'd come back if a certain party was voted in. but as I sad I wouldnt vote for that party.
Maybe if she'd just go for UKIP then Id definitely vote for her.
