eBay community? Nostalgia!

Just got all nostalgic for the old eBay and remembered James phoning me up and trying to tell me off!

Anybody got any more nostalgia?

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

I was chatting to the friend who introduced me to ebay and boards the other day,and he has fond memories of the old q + a saying friends for life were found and also the threads not only solved the questions but some would roll on for 5000 posts, with flirting wit and friendly folk just sorting each others everyday worlds out also as well as ebay stuff.

He says it all ruined when button pressing trolls and james who didnt know one end from the other repeatedly tried to shut the chat side of it down and just have one question one ebay correct answer per topic. (which solved nothing except to have 5 megla maniacs ranting the great ebay do no wrong for every question) his words....All non robot humans left

On round table and after hours (said it was called something else back then)..the round table was alive with debate and discussions and so many posters were so clued up in their chosen they should have been running the country...he recalls his fave posters being rosy cross and upthe creek (who he says he cant believe he's still posting 🙂 and friends were just that friends rather than just posters

After hours was just fun rather than debates and fhg ? he says no chance they were warriors and laughed..Same thing spoilt it all.

So sounds like I missed out on the good times here and its basically an empty cupboard...however  I believe the posters here are extremely clued up and well versed ,so if I had a problem I couldnt solve I most deff would ask on here for input..so credit to the few left 🙂 and ebay should be grateful ..

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

I can think of many times on Q&A when someone would post their tale of woe, receive advice and then be cheered up by the banter.

Can't do that now. Smiley Sad

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

thats what he said was missing now also.bank, .he said when your laughing along with folk your whatever problem didn't look so bad anymore and he left because according to him James and james ebay lovers constantly bp;d post to stop you chatting .

Cant see how that mattered to moderators or ebay myself but sounded like fun to be part of...that was q + a anyway, round table he says just got polital correct silly with posters just coming on to scream racist or offensive or whatever at basically every word in the english language ..including two words that could make a word with the end and beginning of another word...is that true ?  sounds like the gov of this country are in control of ebay if so lol

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

James tried too hard to keep everyone happy IMO. He was too easily manipulated and allowed himself to be drawn into interpersonal disputes between posters when he should have just stuck to whether or not an actual board posting rule had been broken or not.

Example:

Just after I started posting using this ID, which was originally registered as Virtual Assistant, he rang me at home to tell me that another poster had taken offence to my ID and asked me if I would mind changing it to keep the peace.

I changed it to Virtual Brunette but had no idea what was going on and why anyone would find Virtual Assistant offensive.

YEARS later after James had left, out of the blue, I received a PM from another poster confessing that it was they who had objected to my ID and apologising because they now realised that they had mistaken me for someone else who they didn't get on with and whom they thought had registered the ID to take the pee out of them in some way (???).

I couldn't believe that James had taken sides and made me change my ID just on the whim of someone who clearly had an over-inflated sense of their own importance. I hadn't even done anything wrong grr!

There were posters who objected to the risque nature of the banter on Q&A and there were posters who objected to OPs being attacked and abused. There were even some posters who objected to anything that was even remotely off topic so I guess realistically, James was caught between a rock and a hard place really.

I do miss the banter though. There were some really, really witty posters on Q&A.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

This James chap seems a bit odd, why would anyone take the stance he did unless out of their depth. Forums will always attract muppets who try to disrupt the flow of conversation, he never quite grasped that and instead penalised the innocent in favour of the Clowns, perhaps he came from a family of showmen.

That isn't my recollection, or of my memory of the then Community Manager, Lola. In fact speaking from a personal point of view, I found him to be intransigent, immovable, uncompromising, inflexible, and unyielding. Once he made his mind up, he wouldn't budge. Impartiality didn't appear to be in his remit. Apart from anything else, on four separate occasions I mailed him, re 2 questions and 2 suspension notices, and he hadn't even the courtesy to reply to any of them. Only once did he ever respond, but, from his off-hand reply, I wish I hadn't bothered.

Regarding your ID - there is absolutely nothing in it that could in any way shape or form be taken out of context, or be misconstrued as anything else - I would venture as to say that the person who complained to him, was one of his favourite posters, which he certainly had.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

I learned everything I know about eBay from Q&A.  I also learned a massive amount about forums - how to contribute, how to survive, when to back off, when to pitch in.  I made some really good friends.  Now that it is gone, I don't "see" some of them anymore, but the memories of the sheer fun it all remains.  (In some ways, learning about the transient nature of internet friendship is all part of it, I suppose.)

I have a fridge magnet that says "Proud to have been a Q&Aer", made by one of the "residents" during one of the CIN campaigns.  It kinda sums up my feelings about the period.  nod

I think Q&A should have been allowed to stay.  There were problems, it is true, but none of them were unsolvable, IMV.  What has been lost is the interplay between buyers and sellers, which allowed one group to see things through the eyes of the other.

Yeah but apart from all that?  Woman Wink

Of course you're right, EMBs I can't believe I'd forgotten how completely power-crazed he became towards the end.

I had my own run-ins with him, trust me. In fact It's a miracle I'm still around after what happened on the 'Moderation' thread LOL

He wasn't always like that though. I used to think he was alright and he did used to join in with the banter sometimes.

The boards were like the wild west back then and in fairness he had to put up with a LOT of abuse. I always got the feeling that he took it all really personally and I guess maybe it all just took it's toll on him.

I wonder what he's doing now? I certainly don't wish him any ill and I hope he's doing something that makes him happy.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

Unfortunately I searched in vain for that satirical video with James complaining to Ebay management about the way Q&A posters were treating him.

Re: eBay community? Nostalgia!

Talking of satire...what was the name of the poster who did the satirical images...shocking I don't remember because I met him IRL. He sold LPs in Cambridgeshire or around there. He did a few on Henry and Bev. I must check my computer when I get home. Typing this from the car.
