British public wrong about nearly everything, survey shows:
"A new survey for the Royal Statistical Society and King's College London shows public opinion is repeatedly off the mark on issues including crime, benefit fraud and immigration."
Now, why do you think this is? Why are so many people way off the mark regarding issues such as crime, benefit fraud and immigration?

Because the statistics are constantly twisted to support whatever agenda is being pushed at that time.
Like, crime is falling followed by police say crime is rising due to cuts, this can be in the news on the same day.

I reckon largely thanks to the media - sensationalist, biased, inaccurate and misleading reporting particularly in the tabloids that people seem to believe, or want to believe.
Perhaps so many people are way off the mark is hardly surprising given that the highest newspaper circulations by far are The Sun, followed by the Daily Wail and The Mirror.

Can I give a special mention to the output of TVs version of the gutter press
Channel 5s, documentary dept,
just one of their Documentaries can give the Tory press, headlines and scare/cheats stories for months and months

I've said many times, the media don't want to report the news they want to influence opinion; unfortuately they appear to be succeeding!
No surprise considering your average media consumer!!!

Yes, agreed. I think I might have mentioned the problem of tabloids on the odd occassion on other threads....
Problem with newspapers in printed form is they're a dying industry, thus front page headlines over the last decade have tended to "jump the shark" so to speak.
Other issue as you've mentioned, as bolded, is confirmation bias. I think everyone is prone to this to varying degrees, and the internet has also changed the game in this respect. On the one hand, it only takes a couple of clicks to see if someone's telling porkies or not.. e.g. (via FullFact). On the other, it's quite easy to form a specialist group (e.g. Climate change deniers) where the only sourced news for the group is from skewed and dubious sources.
If anyone does still buy a paper in printed form it would be interesting, as an experiment, to buy a paper whose political stance is quite different to their own for a couple of weeks.

Yes, the Dirty Des empire is slowly starting to catch up with old Rupe. Although to be fair, BBC's Saints and Scroungers & Channel 4's "Benefits Street" are bobbing around on the surface too.
I guess it will be a quite a while before we see Saints and Scroungers replaced by Bankers and Ouankers!

Probably not enough variety of personalities for a series on Bankers and Ouankers.
Not heard of FullFact before - interesting. Have bookmarked it - thanks.
