The Christmas adverts.

The Christmas adverts started as soon as November kicked in but what's your favourite and what's the one you like the least?

Have you seen the Amazon advert where the cleaner is "singing" as he works then he has a smart jacket bought for him and he's invited to sing at the microphone?

I think it's awful! It wouldn't be so bad if he was singing properly or even singing a nice song! I don't care for the originals of that song either never mind the awful job he's making of it!

So, what's your opinion?

My opinion is I’m sick of Christmas already.

Re: The Christmas adverts.

I haven’t got a tree yet.

Amy has ordered me one.

When I asked her how much it was the usual answer, nothing.😁😁

Goodnight.

Re: The Christmas adverts.

Another year, another round of tiresome adverts?

You must have seen this year's Asda advert? I'm sick of seeing and hearing it. The chap couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag!!! It's already been on sooooo long and it's only the beginning of November.

The Sainsbury's ad is nearly as bad. Why can't supermarkets advertise their stuff in a meaningful way instead of making up something stupid?

Re: The Christmas adverts.

I'm with  you @cee-dee  awful,  the whole lot is this year,  and what's with the heart string pulling on the John Lewis ad???

It's only Dawn French who makes the M & S ad JUST bearable,  but the others?

It's November, they were thought up too soon, shown much too soon,  and with little Christmas spirit because we've only just had Bonfire Night, no one is in the Christmas Spirit yet ! 🙄

Re: The Christmas adverts.

I realise the original post was a year ago but it's nice to have a more light-hearted post in the discussion boards, so thank you.

For me it's not an advert as such but the 2006 slogan "Christmas isn't Christmas without M&S", which apparently re-surfaced in 2023 at least in social media. It's amusing as, unlike many slogans, it's factually correct. Not sure if you're meant to remove one S or both, though.

Is it too early to wish you all a Happy Chrita?

Yes I know 🙂

Perhaps I should've said "thank you _everyone_"?

Anyway, thank you to all posters keeping this fun thread going.

Aaah  OK,  to me it sounded like you were having a go at me , for resurrecting an old thread,  which is also a bug bear of mine and many others ! 😊

Re: The Christmas adverts.

Now then, there's 1/ "old and no longer relevant" (and by "old" there, what's meant is "ancient") and then there's 2/ "old but still relevant" which I think this thread qualifies for and that's why I resurrrected my OP from a year ago.

1/ really is annoying and it seems for more than just me?

Re: The Christmas adverts.

The adverts this year have been running a while now and that one from Asda has got beyond annoying now. It's on FAR too often. One day it was on four times in an hour!!!

The only good thing about the Morrisons short advert is the (very) short bits of the tune from "Stop the Cavalry". Pity there isn't a song called "Stop the Adverts"?

Re: The Christmas adverts.

Do the curent Christmas adverts actually persuade any of the posters on here to buy any products or visit the stores in the advert? That is, persuade them to buy something they wouldn't have bought without seeing the advert or likewise, visiting a store that they wouldn't have visited without seeing the advert? I thought the idea of advertising was "show off" products and persuade the viewer to visit the store and buy. The current bunch of elaborate adverts look more like adverts for the people that made/produced them.

You've nailed it. The adverts are 'tradition' now. Those producing the adverts (their department is called Christmas Replays Are Patronising) must spend their large budget otherwise they won't receive the same budget next year.

It's also an 'arms race' for rival company execs: "My advert's better than yours, ner ner ner ner ner." (How do you spell that childish sing-song taunt?!)

Next year companies could try scaling it back or have no advert at all, and see if it affects sales. But of course, in this 'arms race' no one wants to be the first to "blink".  That's also why we're doomed to the DFS sale for eternity.

Re: The Christmas adverts.

I personally think they heyday for these adverts were when Waitrose/John Lewis were knocking it out of the park with dogs on trampolines!
All rather mundane down.

Re: The Christmas adverts.

The tiresome Asda adverts are on nearly every ad break. BUT, they're reducing the amount of things they stock that is, stopping stocking 4,000 items according to a news item I read and also cutting back on staff sick days! Is Asda in trouble because their sales have declined by over 4% in the 12 weeks to the 30th of November! Those adverts are probably driving people away rather than encouraging buyers?
