Question - should I root my phone?

I have a HTC desire and the memory is virtually full because of all the installed apps which I cannot tranfer onto the SD card.

If I "root" my phone, will I lose any data from the diary or contact list.?

Will "rooting" enable me to transfer apps to the SD card to free up memory?

Has anybody seen a sense of humour running around loose? Somebody seems to have lost one.
