This story, if true, beats into a cocked hat any previous story regarding Health and Safety ...... unless you know better.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me, schools have rules and they are responsible for keeping children safe whilst in their care.
What is ridiculous is the mother making so much fuss over such a trifle.

Fair enough - just take it off. Don't make a fuss.
but....
It is still a ridiculous state of affairs though.

Maybe not quite so ridiculous though IF the letter photographed in the article is accurate -
"There have been a number of instances where such bands have caused health and safety issues when they have caught on door handles, play equipment etc causing injury."
You can just imagine the situation where the school said it was OK to wear them and someone subsequently was injured - "You knew they were dangerous yet you said it was OK to wear them - you were negligent, I'm going to sue you"!!!!!

I think loads of schools have banned them, for various reasons, and use Health & Safety as cover
But of course the Mail & others will use any excuse to go after H&S legislation , their real target, by attacking 'suspect' rules put in place by Bosses/Managers, which have nothing to do with Health & Safety laws/regulations.

The times ive caught my ring at work, was numerous and could easily result in stripping the skin from my finger. i always wear gloves where possible now. I guess a band could just as easily get caught.
search for finger degloved- warning not for the squeemish-

I once had to turn a machine off because a fellow worker was in very serious danger of being strangled when his tie got caught up in the rollers.
He was someone who often irritated me and I've always had a slight regret that I didn't just take out my paper knife and cut his tie in half.
