Re: One Word....

Round.

Them there were the days..... The clattering binder went round and round the field dropping the sheaves on the ground. When it got down to the last strip of standing corn, all the Rabbits made a dash for it, so many, you couldn't shoot them all.

When all the corn was cut, you went round the field propping up the sheaves in to stooks. It was more sport sending the dogs round the stooks flushing the rabbits from under the stooks. The dogs were trained to flush but not chase so they didn't get shot.

When it was time to get the corn in, it was all picked up on to the carts using the Pikel (fearsome weapon!). It was taken to the stackyard where the thrashing machine (driven by the traction engine) would get the corn off the straw (which might be baled or stacked loose). The corn was bagged and the chaff left in a big pile.

Now sometimes straw was chopped up using a chaff-cutter, the short pieces of straw was sometimes fed as it was or mixed with chaff and used as fodder.
