James Gamble (a soap maker) was the founder of P&G, not John Gamble as mentioned in the article. They could have been related though as both came from Ireland.
Interesting piece.
The description of the food waste inspected by the Admiralty is quite gross.
The few remaining unopened tins (because the stench was so awful) were given to the poor... 😮
