It's all Greek to me?

So Greece owes billions of €uro to several lenders, it didn't make it's June payment of €1.6 billion to the IMF and it now expects to be lent more money?

What have they done with all that money? Frittered it away on........ what? Where's it gone?

If you and I owed substantial sums to various lenders and didn't make repayments as agreed, what would the lenders say if we said we couldn't pay what we owe and asked to be lent more?

And RM was not the only one to raid pension funds. Gordon Brown raided pensions too in 1997. 118 billion pounds is supposed to have been the cost to the people.

It's all gone quiet on the Greek front?

Not long ago it dominated the TV, the papers and the web. Now????

And the Conservatives are raiding pensions, now. You don't think they are allowing people to take all their pension in a lump as an act of kindness...no. They are looking at the tax benefits to the Treasury.

Re: It's all Greek to me?

Bye the bye, whilst we're all struggling here, Greeks & expats alike, it's a comfort to know that the Inspector Clouseaus, sorry I meant to say MPs, governing us here come out on a full parliamentary pension after 8 years in office !

Now that's the kind of pension dreams are made of...!

Re: It's all Greek to me?

I see nothing wrong with people taking early retirement to enjoy the simple things in life especially when the Germans are paying. Here in the UK there is a determined effort on the part of government to get everyone engaged in pension provision whilst moving the goalposts to ensure they never reach pensionable age.

Re: It's all Greek to me?

Don't get me started on MPs pensions or even the local council officials, whose salaries far exceed MPs and who, if unsatisfactory, get a lump sum to go, rather than the sack for incompetence.

Re: It's all Greek to me?

As a youngster, many, many moons ago, it was drummed into my head that when you borrow, the onus is then on you to repay your debt, with no ifs or buts about it, end of story !

Here, we have a classic case of utter economic mismanagement, saddled with such a debt that not even our children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren will be able to ever repay ! Come to that, I think even a country like Japan would be hard pressed, and we're talking about the interest repayments alone !

In 1922, after the Asia Minor miltary campaign fiasco, 3 former Greek prime ministers, 2 government ministers, and 1 general were summarily executed for high treason !...many Greeks are now toying with the idea with this present lot ! ! !

The Greeks may toy with ideas, but they don't get up and work like the Germans do.

That's the difference.  The lazy Greeks lie in bed all day, thinking about philosophy - and how to avoid paying their taxes.

Whereas the earnest Germans go to work, and build Moon rockets.

Isn't that the truth?

Re: It's all Greek to me?

It is not only the Greek populace which has been feeling the pressure as a result of this saga. Germans are also beginning to feel uncomfortable, with echoes of their past coming back to haunt them - something which the 'grand projet' of the European Union was intended to overlay and gradually soothe away. But old demons have been aroused. I came across this newspaper headline and article from Die Welt, which uses some pretty vivid language:

>> A wave of hatred of Germans surges through Europe. The hatred of Germans has long since surged over Greece's borders to become established everywhere. The "Fourth Reich" must be on the way.  Don't let's kid ourselves: nasty Germans - that's what we are.

>> And so it's here again: the nasty Germans. We had almost forgotten what that was. But now half the world is rubbing our nose in it. The nasty Germans - the crude villain, who without a second thought crushes small countries underfoot. Who with an instinctive feeling of national superiority sweeps away whole peaceful societies, and with its "Panzer" manufacturing expertise overwhelms (other) defenceless economies...

www.welt.de/politik/ausland/144178920/deutschenhass-rollt-durch-europa

This could be a turning point for the whole EU and eurozone project. If the Germans, the EU's paymasters, get fed up with it all, and decide that the re-aroused resentments of other European countries towards Germans outweighs their desire to be thought of as reformed "good Europeans" within a European Union, the EU game is over.
