How do you pronounce....

How do you pronounce the word Subaru?

Do you say "Soo-bah-roo" or is it "Soo-bar-oo" with emphasis on the "bar"?

For an on-going thread, what other words can you think of which have questionable or alternative pronunciations?

Soo-bah-roo

Vegetables - I pronounce it vegtables as opposed to veg-e-tables which is a bit pretentious

Re: How do you pronounce....

I've always pronounced it Soo-baroo, don't know if it's correct.

A lot of people pronounce Hyundai as Hye-un-dye but I think it's supposed to be Heeun-day.

Re: How do you pronounce....

Toyota is not pronounced as we say it (Toy-oh-ta) in Japan. The Japanese have no 'oy' sound and never end a syllable with a Y, the correct pronunciation is Toh-Yoh-Tah.

Re: How do you pronounce....

Another pronunciation I have an argument (friendly of course), especially with people of Birmingham as I originally come from Bedfordshire is how the letter H is pronounced.

Is it haitch or aitch, I always pronounce it aitch but people from where I live in the West Midlands including Brummies pronounce it haitch, so I saw house is spelt ..........aitch oh you es were.......... And my fellow midlanders say it is spelt .......haitch oo how es eee......

Really is strange to me, I do believe my version is the correct version ...... The queens English.  Xxxx. Or Kings lol which ever you feel is correct xxx

I think how you pronounce things really depends on where you actually live and half the time local dialect.

To give you a clue i went to school in Henley in Arden.

Re: How do you pronounce....

I was brought up in the south east - queens English and all and used to say Barth (bath) and darnce (dance) etc. Then I shared a house with 4 northern guys who used to tell me there was no R in bath. That sunk in and made a permanent impression for some reason so now I speak mostly 'southern' with the odd northern pronounciation for bath or dance, chance, and similar thrown in !

Re: How do you pronounce....

The reason for the thread is that I've been watching some Australian and New Zealand cop programmes and they've been pronouncing Subaru as "Soo-bar-oo" with emphasis on the "bar".

I've always pronounced it as "Soo-bah-roo". I know lotsa people call them a Scooby-do or a Scooby.

I thought it might be interesting to continue with other debateable pronunciations.

Here's a word:- How should Digoxin be pronounced?
