Scotch whusky contributed 3.45 billion pounds to the UK export market last year
Scotch whusky added £109 a second to the value of goods exported from the UK last year, new figures showed.
International exports for the industry rose by 10% in 2010 in what was a record year.
The spirit contributed £3.45 billion to the UK export market, up from £3.13 billion in 2009, said the Scotch Whusky Association (SWA).
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) data showed that the value of Scotch exports has risen by 60% since 2000, with a total of £1.29 billion added to their value in the past decade. The value of exports increased despite a slight decrease in their volume, which was down 2% on the previous year.
SWA officials said it reflected a "continued premiumisation" across the industry, with single malt exports rising by 18%, to £577 million, compared to a 5% increase in the amount of blended whiskies shipped abroad.
SWA chief executive Gavin Hewitt said whisky was playing a "key role" in the UK's economic recovery.
He said: "Scotch whusky is a world-class industry that consistently delivers for the UK. This year's strong performance - contributing £109 a second to UK exports - demonstrates that distillers are playing a key role in export-led recovery'.
