It's certainly the case that much of the thinking of what we might consider backward societies was in place in western society although it gradually died out over the years, it can be seen where women still are not always treated as equal to men.

The reasoning behind the burqua is little different from the token head covering that women following the Catholic faith wear in church.

Only a little different?

The burka is a sign of degradation and has no place on our streets.  Whenever I see a woman wearing a burka or the niqab veil - I like most feel very uneasy. Particularly if she is accompanied by a man whose face is open to the world.

And sometimes she is made to walk behind him.

Veiled women, even if they believe wearing the full burka is their own free choice, send out a message to all women. That message is fear. Of men. The burka represents female oppression. It is the visible sign that says women must be invisible to men, for their own safety and to protect them from lustful thoughts. In a free society, which thankfully the UK still is, the burka is an affront.

A woman who cannot be named for legal reasons - was allowed by a judge to enter a plea with only her eyes visible behind a niqab. She was allowed to confirm her identity by lifting her veil in front of a female in a side room of Blackfriar's Crown Court in London. Judge Murphy feared an impostor could take her place or the jury might not be able to decide her innocence or guilt with her feature shrouded. (exactly how to decide) But he reluctantly gave his permission, so the court case could ''move on''. I thought that  was in contempt of court? And she should have been sent down the cells until she agreed to follow OUR laws. We would have been. He either does his job or he dosen't. Sack him.

Some of the ladies of those Religions are not even allowed to raise their eyes and even glance at a man in the street or elsewhere either. There are strict rules they have to follow.Woman Sad

Re: Could it happen here.

I said little different because both are based on the idea that men need to be protected from their inability to resist the lure of the evil temptress who cannot help herself from being tempting and also to protect men from losing their possession to other men who would be attracted to it.

The historical idea that women are somehow inferior and can be controlled by men is ever present and should be fought wherever it rears its ugly head.

If women should cover their heads in church, why not men also?

Oh dear I forgot, but then I am an atheist so I guess the following is meaningless where I'm concerned.

1 Corinthians 11:7
A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
