DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

There are several Everett-Green's listed, Chris - not your title, though. The one which I looked at was published by Shaw & Co - lovely looking book - £2.50. 😞

Not a particularly popular author, methinks.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello, Bee. Are you manning the post? Dereliction of duty I call it. 🙂

I have found several of his books for much more than £2.50, but not an exact tie-up.

Don't really expect it to fetch much - if anything - but it has such a pretty cover.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello, Chris. Are you posting the man? I'm waiting. 😉

I just thought I'd have a look so that I could wake you up! I suppose Steve and His Lordship know that you've looked in all the usual places and have nothing to add.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Just thought I would break away from all the uprisings & revolutions to get back to a book problem/ question.

My Brother and I are the proud if slightly perplexed owners of the following item & would like to know what to do with it & what (if anything) it is worth.

It is a full set of leather bound Encyclopedia Britannica from 1911 - with a 1920 supplement (not leather bound) - I think there are 22 volumes. The bindings and the leather on some volumes is in very poor condition and is flaking and crumbling - and to be honest if you took it on right now you would need a hoover to go with it!

I am rather attached to it in a way, but neither of us has the space for it and we have made the joint decision that it has to go.

Please don't suggest the aga as I will be heartbroken! Has it any value?

Migsie. ______________________________________________________________

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I have a copy of the first novel :- The Striped Umbrella by Guy McClone, published by Constable 1937, anybody know where I can get any information on this book.

Migsie, there are buyers out there for such things but, as the information is so dated, they will be looking for the bindings for show rather than the contents. If the binding isn't up to much I'm not sure where else to suggest (other than the Aga). Recyclers perhaps. At least they then stand a chance of becoming another book.

Roy2895, I can't find anything for sale by Guy McClone. So it is either extaordinarily rare or similarly unpopular. Possibly both.

Thanks manor house - shows how lazy I am I didn't even look - but actually those are different - but these are identical.....

Apart, of course from the condition!!! Given what those are going for is it worth sticking them on here? I appreciate they are not going to make anything like that - but it is really only the spines that have gone - the boards (?) are in similar condition. The pages are in v good condition and they are beautiful books. ______________________________________________________________

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I often come across books where the dj has been repaired on the inside with stamp edging, brown sticky paper etc.
How much of this is acceptable?
I've only ever done it on the family's (or school) books to stop them getting worse.
Obviously I state this with regard to any books I'm selling but wondered if it was big no-no. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

When collecting books with dust jackets, I prefer ones that haven't been tampered with too much. A good way of protecting them is to get some dust jacket sleeves. I use "trimsleeve" from www.care4books.com, who also sell archive quality tape that doesn't yellow and can be used to repair tears.

mollybob, I'm looking for sleeves like that, but couldn't get a response from that link. What do they cost, and how long does it take to fit them?

Like everything else, it's all a time/ cost/ benefit equation, isn't it?

The website doesn't seem to be working very well this morning. The company name is D&M Packaging Supplies, email: packaging@dandmbooks.com
If you contact them they should be able to send you a catalogue.
Trimsleeve is the cheapest and costs £14.60 for 230 mm x 23 metres (9" inches high). They do discounts for multiple purchases too.

Thanks for that. Now is it a 2 minute job or a 20 minute job to fit it?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I find it's pretty quick - probably a two-minute job. All you have to do is cut off the required length, then fold it at the bottom to fit the dust jacket.
I collect quite a lot of books with dust jackets and find it really useful. I'm not sure how cost-effective it is from a seller's point of view though.
