Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Morning all, I have bought a first edition signed book. When it arrived the signature was actually an autograph on a page from a leaflet or something, which had been cut out and stuck inside the book. Now I was expecting the signature to be actually on the page itself. Have never had a signed book before, was I expecting too much?
It wan't a great deal of money but I feel a bit cheated, I wouldn't have bought it if it hadnt been signed X-(

It wasn't necessarily cheating. If it wasn't noted that the signature was on a pasted in label it wasn't entirely up front, either.

Who was the author?

Alan Titchmarsh, Mr Macgregor. I like his books, but could have got the p/b for pennies! All down to experience I suppose.

Sounds like a bit of cheating then. Had it been W.S. Churchill, or someone of similar eminence, I could have understood.

Still, at least it saved you chasing through half the gardens of the home counties looking for him to sign it for you.

Hi.My name is cybersioux and i have Johnsons Dictionary's in two volumns.Both are dated 1810 and are in good condition,scrunched corners but tight binding and immaculate inside with just some spotting on the first pages.Any clues to their worth (before i get too excited)Thanks for any help.

That would seem to be the 10th edition.

In original bindings and not too badly worn you could be looking at £1,000 - but give me about £300 either way for windage.

I'd get expert help with those if I were you. Check your local museum and see if they have a valuer from one of the big auction houses doing a visit.

Manor_House - what can you tell me about the publisher Ted Smart. Is this the poor end of the trade or what?

I've noticed they seem to pick up some sort of later publication rights; I've seen a few titles published by them that were, only a year or two earlier, published by a bigger name company.

Need a bit of detective work doing please.

Have acquired for the princely sum of 20p, a book entitled 'Back to the Carpenter of Nazareth' by Frank W. Moyle, Vicar of Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton. It is a softback priced at 1/- published by Sherratt & Hughes.

Have searched all the links I can think of but can't find this particular one.

Very sorry, but it's that old chestnut again - First Editions.

Have a Rick Stein which says: First published 1988. There is no other date there, but the number run is: 5 7 9 10 8 6.

Is it, or isn't it? And, if it is, why doesn't it start from 1?

It IS a first edition, but it is a fifth impression.

The impression line doesn't start at '1' because your copy is a fifth impression. In a copy of the first impression (what most people refer to as the 'first edition') the line would be 13579108642.

The lowest number in the impression line is the impression of the book it is printed in.
