DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

#1019 There are several publishers who do not use the 'impression line'. I have a number of Bantam 1sts without impression lines.

Basic rule - if it says 'First published in XXXX' and has no other publication information it is probably a first.

That doesn't work with many Warne publications, but there is a book on the market that helps to identify even those problem titles. Trouble is it is a collectable in itself, the first edition of it being a private publication. Even recent reprints can fetch 50.00GB or more.

Check the descriptions against your copy until you find one fairly close.

But remember the books on that link are still unsold. No guarantee they will sell at those prices.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi, I don't want to waste your time, but am looking for some advice. I have a book here - but have no idea what it is worth.
It is a "Chandos Classic, No. 69" called 'Every-day Book of Modern Literature' Published by Frederick Warne and Co. but printed by Ballantyne Press in 1879. It is compiled and Edited, as it states, by the Late George H. Townsend and printed just after his death in accordance with his plans. There is some minor damage to the binding and the outer spine, but good condition considering age. The cover has an indented floral pattern on the front with a gilt title label. The cover is green. I hope that maybe you may be able to give some advice. I have looked on the net, but could only find information about the Ballantyne Press. Unfortunately I cannot supply an image.

There is a copy on the link above.

The damage to your copy could reduce the attainable price considerably.

I'm afraid that 'considering age' only really comes into it when looking at old books. The item you describe would be considered a 'modern' first edition. An 'old' book would be more on the order of 15th or 16th century.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I have a copy of Unknown And Yet Well-Known by Mrs F West Published By The Religious Tract Society, it is undated but the inscription on the front endpaper is dated 1892. I can't find a single copy of this book anywhere! Anybody have any idea how much it is worth?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

How can I tell if this is a first print, please? Catalogue page states first published in Gt Britain 1995 followed by the usual blurb about copyright and then ISBN 0575058080. There is no print run. Your help appreciated.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Weezie, RTS items, being late victorian indoctrination material, were produced in vast numbers in an effort to 'educate' the poor. Some titles can be collectable but the vast majority aren't.

Pat, looks like you probably have a first published by someone not yet into using the impression line by 1995. What is it?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello Sig - now that I've put my head back on, the book in question is Terry Pratchett's Maskerade. Published Victor Gollancz 1995. I obviously don't have a find as there a few for sale on Ebay. However, I just wondered about not having a print run.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Sig,

I know normally the RTS aren't worth a lot, I have had many copies of other RTS books, but have always found multiple copies of these all over the internet.

This one is no where to be found, so will this make it collectable, any thoughts on how to begin to price this one?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I can only find one mention of it on Google.

Seems to have had something to do with reformation, putting down catholics and modelling the ideal Christian hero. It was mentioned in an article in the Womens Writing journal.

As to pricing, faced with the same dilemma, I think I'd probably add a quid to what it cost me and offer it up to the scrutiny of the eBay audience.

I would say no. They stick in charity shops at 50p.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I saw a 'want it' for Readers Digest books the other day, but didn't actually read the ad so don't know if it was for something specific.

Might be worth looking.
